AJ's Toy Boarders + Weekend Links

Those little green Toy Soliders feeling a bit old hat? Well, do what every other sane adult would do and trade them in for these rad Toy Boarders at Goodhood. They come in skate, surf + snow versions. Dude!

So it's been another hectic week but I'm determind to catch some down time this w/e. I still haven't managed to celebrate my birthday yet, so we can settle down with a beer at some point. Do you lot have any nice plans?

Studio Hay have been burning with ideas recently and my latest like is their awesome Strike Matches. A simple idea that preserves the cardboard box tradition but meets it with a modern take on presentation through colour and varying dimensions.

The matches are a collaborative design by American product designer Shane Schneck and Swedish graphic designer Clara von Zweigbergk. I do like it when designers from different disciplines and cultures come together to either create something new or like in this case, re-interpret an everyday object and these are super snazzy in my book! - Yasumi.

HAY products available at Goodhood.

Serious cool 6-piece collection which marks the second series of Goods by Goodhood. The second drop features multi-print coach jackets, reversible bucket hats, screen printed button down pyramid shirts and soft cotton logo tees. Their online store features on my search history so much so that it probably should be my homepage and the second installment for me this feels like a natural progression from the first collection. And to seal the deal it's all Made in UK.

5 Years of Goodhood

The Goodhood Store of London recently celebrated 5 years in business with an exclusive range of products in collaboration with some of their favourite brands and people. The range has been created with their specifically to the store's tastes. I love a bit of Goodhood and here's a few things that took my fancy. My favoruite piece is probably the Norse Projects polka dot shop jacket, tasty stuff. There's tons more ace stuff in the collection, check the whole range out here.

Enjoy what's left of your weekend dudes, and remember to support your local.

Nevermind Then

Images from Goodhood
Currently lots of stores with online presence are flipping things around and doing their own in-house lookbooks to showcase their offerings. It's a winning formula and something which makes total sense, show your best stuff off to the world in a way other than using static images. You never really get a proper feel for the fit and style of the products. Oi Polloi have a lot to answer for, with the ever popular  Deck Out, even giving characters and narratives to each look. But today I'm concentrating on Goodhood's collection, called Nevermind. The East London indi retailer is a store I'm only familiar with in the online world as I've never been to the physical store(though I did live 1 tube stop away a couple of winter's ago), but it's this sort of stuff that really draws me in. I'm a sucker for colours and patterns, as you all know. From the title and first images you instantly make the assumption that it's all inspired by Nirvana's 1991 romper stomper but I would say it's more just taking bits and bats from the early to mid 90s in general.

The top image is clearly inspired by Kurt's signature look(though he would have been in Converse One Stars for sure) and some bits looks like they came from the My So-Called Life wardrobe. There's a nod to BritPop with sloppy cardigans worn with stripes, loose chinos with flannel and high on the head woolies with technical outerwear with skateboard shoes.

The whole thing is making me want to dust off my Blur and Weezer albums again. Goodhood seems to mix sort-after premium brands with uber-cool cult and streetwear really well, it's not how I would normally wear things but it's acting and a great source of inspiration on these bleak grey days up north.
