A Short Stay at Boro Hotel, New York

It may have only been for one night but I recently enjoyed a memorable stay at the Boro Hotel in Long Island, New York. This overnight marked the end of our working trip to Easton, PA, and the start of myself and Jordan's three days of free time in NYC (lots more to share on both of those trips soon).

After checking in we parked up in the aesthetically pleasing lobby for an hour of caffeine fixes + beers, just before we headed off to see the NY Yankies play Washington Nationals as the ionic Yankies stadium in the Bronx. But let's not glace over that lobby too quickly, as this perfectly sized space was actually the highlight for me. Horizontal airbricks backed the length of the reception, giving your eyes plenty to look at while the check-in process went down. Be forgiven if your gazed wanders elsewhere in the room, as the late evening light danced across the soft green painted walls, untreated concrete pillars as if planned perfectly. The mixture of mid-century and powder-coated contemporary furniture worked a treat.

As for the rooms, well I definitely lucked out being on a high floor; the windows faced out towards Manhattan, making my early morning rise that little bit more special. My room was spacious with a huge window letting in loads of natural light. A wooden study desk and comfy chairs were all there but I inevitably didn't get chance to use. The bathroom was neat and well designed, all I really need.

Would I stay at Boro Hotel again? For sure! Being on Long Island it's a little further out the way than you'd usually think of staying, but I think it's worth the extra few miles for such a memorable experience - even if it's just for the rooftop view, which overlooks the whole of the New York skyline.

My stay was covered as part of a wider project with Majestic Athletic, which I'll be sharing soon!

Jack Spade Debut Eyewear Collection SS14

For Jack Spade's debut into the Eyewear business, the brand took to the streets of New York and enlisted the help from some of the city's most colourful street vendors. The collection features sunglasses in all shapes and sizes, with my personal favourite being the 50's inspired Bryant, which featured in their SS14 campaign with Pro-Surfer Mikey DeTemple.

The collection is available online, (US + across all other Jack Spade stores) and at their Brewer Street, London store. To celebrate the London launch on Thursday 10th April, good people at Big Apple Hot Dogs will be serving up some top quality foot-longs with all the trimmings.

Hudson River Watch Co.

These watches by Hudson River Watch Co. really caught my eye when I saw them on the Kickstarter  site a couple of weeks ago. Each of the 9 watches in the collection are named and inspired by streets across New York City. Above are the ones that stood out to me. Berry St. and Cranberry Place are both inspired by flea markets and antique stopwatches, Fulton St. by ship telegraph dials, Front St. and Sutton Place take on a more classic look, reflecting the characteristics of the area and finally my favourite, Charlton St which draws influence from the dial of a cigar humidor.

As I mentioned previously Hudson River Watch Co. is currently running as a Kickstarter, and they have recently reached their pledge target. It's really inspiring to projects like this on there, hopefully we will hear more from the brand very soon.

Line Posters

LinePoster via Mizhenka

These tube system posters by LinePosters are the best thing I've seen on Etsy in ages, so much so that I'm definitely considering buying one. London would make sense but then again maybe buying another city that I haven't been to would give me the kick I need to actually visit there. They come in several different colours and there's tons more cities available. For under £20 they'd make a cracking gift without breaking the bank, score.

Anything interesting going on this weekend? Enjoy it, you've deserved it!

Skateboarding in the 1960s

Skateboarding is one of those things that I wish I'd learnt when I had the chance, when I was youngster. I'd love nothing more than to cruise around the streets on a set of wheels, but I've gone past the age of where it's socially acceptable for me to be practicing outside the front of my house. I just can't be doing that at 26, slipping around while the 16 year old nearly pros wizz past wouldn't be a great look.

These skateboarding young'uns from 1960s New York make me very envious. In all serious though I think they're great, from what seems like such a carefree and exciting time. The innocence of being a kid and mucking about is something I'm sure we all miss. These really must have been an exciting time, when a new craze hits when you're a kid it's all you can think about, I'm looking at your Pogs, Rollerblades and Tamagotchi!

Which big crazes do you remember (and secretly what to take up again!) with found memories?

Burberry at 444 Madison Avenue

28th May has been declared "Burberry Day" in New York by Mayor Bloomberg.

"The proclamation, by New York City’s Mayor Bloomberg, is in honour of the continued investment and commitment Burberry makes to New York and the US and coincides with the official lighting of the Burberry logo on the rooftop of the new Burberry Americas headquarters at 444 Madison Avenue. The site at 444 Madison Avenue is one of only six grand fathered signage locations in New York.

The fifty foot long Burberry logos will be lit across the iconic Manhattan skyline for the first time this Thursday evening, during an event to celebrate the occasion being hosted by Burberry Chief Executive Angela Ahrendts and Burberry Creative Director Christopher Bailey for over 300 guests.

To further celebrate Burberry Day, 20% of all purchases made in Burberry New York stores at 57th Street and Spring Street in SoHo on the day will be donated to The Burberry Foundation."
