Outfit | Blues, Greys + Thoughts on Instagram vs. Blogs

Wearing - Sunspel Sweatshirt | J.Crew Chinos | Vans Old Skool | CHUP Socks | Fairends Cap | Watch c/o Timex | Campbell Cole Key Wrap

Feels like ages since the last time I shared an everyday outfit on here. It used to be a weekly thing, but, I dunno, I guess we all seem to be sharing more + more on Instagram, and certain types of blog posts have taken a back seat. I still really do see the value in running a blog - there's lots of advantages, and I'll touch on that subject soon - but the speed of sharing on Instagram is hard to match.

While we might be spending more and more time on Instagram, and less reading blogs (I still visit plenty every week but admittedly I do comment a little less these days) I still like to think there's a good bunch of you who enjoy seeing a full outfit in a traditional blog format.

So here we are. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing too eye-catching, nothing out of the ordinary; just a straight-up everyday outfit that makes me feel good. Blues + greys is all I need at the moment. Oh, and because we took these shots at the weekend we squeezed in a Cloudwater beer for good measure.

Do you still enjoy seeing everyday outfits on blogs or are they more accessible on Instagram?

This June marked my first 12 months of working as full time freelance. One year free from any part time jobs distracting me from my aim to being able to fully support myself with freelance writing, content creation and consultation work. Every day starts with one heck of a to-do list, and from this I have started to view time in a much more productive way.

Realistically, that to-do list never really goes down - small tasks are added by the hour, and sometimes I go through days when it feels like nothing is getting done. It's slow progress with the small jobs, but we get there in the end. Something that has been on that list for a good few months is to arrange a meet with British watchmakers Farer.

In early July I found myself standing inside Farer HQ, on the hottest day of the year, slap-bang in the centre of Piccadilly, London. Meeting the people behind the design is a big deal to me, and I was pleased as punch to be meeting the people behind some of the nicest looking contemporary watches on the market.

For a good hour we chatted about design, craft, small product details that the untrained eye may miss (each watch holds many tiny surprises) and the design community. The enthusiasm the Farer team had towards their craft was unmistakable and infectious.

Farer launched their debut British-designed collection back in 2015, but since then the range has expanded; the standout Barnato model sits alongside the dual-time Carter, four sub-dial models and the three-hand collection. Each watch is Swiss-made driven by Ronda movement and comes with a choice of 5 straps, including the newly released coloured leather series, and my favourite, the silver Milanese bracelet. Over the next few months the brand will be releasing their first Automatic collection, which is going to be all sorts of awesomeness.

For anyone who is a regular reader of this blog you'll know that the main underlying theme is design. It's my main passion. Meeting people who share similar passions and are involved in the design community is a big deal to me, and reinforces that taking the risk to turn full time freelancer was the path I was meant to take.

My Style Essentials Video

If you're in or around London this week then make sure you pick up a free copy of Coach Mag, you'll see my face in there! A couple of weeks back I headed down to Shoreditch to film this short video with Coach Mag and Clarins Men. You can read the full version of the magazine feature here.

It's all about my daily essentials (and yes, a quick scan of Tintin is clear a must!); favourite clothing, everyday carry, social media habits and grooming tips.

Let me know what you think! Fun, hey? Enjoy your weekend.

MR PORTER & Beams Japanese Collective + Weekend Links

We don't tend to share as much "fashion news" as we used to (it's not really our thing), but sometimes something comes along that gives us the buzz. Menswear is one of my main passions, and Japanese design + culture has been something I've always taken a keen interest in. MR PORTER visited Japan, in partnership with Beams, to create this short film, which illustrates 6 of the most exciting and promising stars in the country's menswear scene. And if you're not that into menswear, check it anyway - it's beautifully shot.

Read more about each designer on MR PORTER's journal.

Outfit | Summer Basics

It's been crazy hot across the UK for a couple of weeks but I'm reluctantly giving the shorts a rest this weekend; main reason being they're all in the wash! Since picking up this navy button-down in Orlando it's quickly became my most worn shirt - it's made from seersucker so it's the perfect lightweight material for keeping cool. I've been wearing it with khaki shorts mostly but for the weekend I went with selvedge Levi's 511, along with a fresh white tee by White T-Shirt Co., adidas Stan Smith + my new repro Brooklyn Bushwick Ebbets cap, which Coggles sent over, as part of our collab. Perfect summer look for the cooler days.

Wearing - J.Crew Seersucker Shirt | T-Shirt c/o White T-Shrt Co. | Levi's 511 | adidas Stan Smith c/o JD | CHUP socks (thanks Dan) | Ebbets Field Flannel Baseball Cap c/o Coggles

Hollie Wears -  COS Dress | H&M Leggings | Longchamp Bag | Vans x The Beatles Trainers | Earrings Unknown

We received some lovely comments regarding Hollie's appearance on the blog so I asked her if she wouldn't mind making it a regular thing! As soon as she saw these Vans x The Beatles trainers she had to add them to here growing collection. Worn with a simple dress from COS to make the sneaks really stand out.

What about you? I'd love to hear some of your Summer Essentials, and advice for staying cool?

Thank you for visiting,
Mat

Wearing - Levi's Hawaiian Shirt, Jeans c/o Albam , Uniqlo T-Shirt, Jack Purcell Trainers, Atlanta Braves Cap, Sunglasses c/o Jack Spade, Disney Watch, Ralph Lauren Socks, Northern Goods Co. Key Clip

We headed down to the park over the Bank Holiday to enjoy the sunshine, I'm working pretty solid until our holiday later this week so it was nice to catch some downtime. It was only the second wear of my new jeans, which my friends at Albam sent over, and they're already my new favourites. The ones I'm wearing are the Spring Slim leg jeans, which are the brand's best selling style; they're made from 13oz Japanese selvedge denim and constructed in the Nottingham, England. They're a true slim fit, which I'm favouring these days.

I'm starting to get into the holiday mood now so I decided to wear them with my Levi's reverse print Hawaiian shirt, Mickey Mouse watch, Jack Spade sunglasses, and classic leather Jack Purcell trainers. It's a perfect everyday look for me, even though it might seem a little "Disney tourist takes a wrong turn". I'm really looking forward to seeing how the Albam jeans wear in over the next few months, I'll be sure to keep you all posted. If you're looking for something a little slimmer, Albam have just released a new fit - The New Slim, which has narrower leg + hem, with a slightly longer rise.
