Store Visit | Rivet & Hide, Fitzrovia, London

 Rivet & Hide, Fitzrovia, London

Whilst myself and Nik were recently out on fieldwork for Huckberry (more on this soon, should be good!) in London we took the opportunity to visit a store we've been keen to profile for a while. Having only visited Rivet & Hide to escape the rain, briefly a few months ago, we headed back to give it the time it deserves. Found in Fitzrovia, a couple of minutes away from Tottenham Court Road, in Central London, is one of the capital's most well-stocked specialist denim stores.

Carrying mostly American, British and Japanese brands, the store owner and staff prides themselves on having personally met the people behind the brands, visited the factories where the garments are made, and building trust and honest friendship with their customers.

Within the store you'll find selvedge denim brands, such as 3sixteen, Dawson Denim, Hiut, Iron Heart, Mister Freedom, and other hard-to-find smaller labels, alongside accessories from CHUP socks, Viberg footwear, Born & Bred leather goods, and some amazing handmade blankets by Indigofera.

Rivet & Hide - 5 Windmill St, Fitzrovia, London W1T 2JA. See more of our Store Visits here.

Inspiration on Instagram | Our Favourite Hashtags + Themes

Instagram is becoming my favourite social media. The quality of the pictures is improving all the time and there seem to be more comments and interaction from genuine people (rather than spam accounts) - which is ace.

It probably helps that with Instagram, people tend to be more considered about what they post. Rather than reel off a load of holiday snaps, they’ll choose one or two of their best pics instead - so there’s fewer wonky pictures of the hotel shower room and more of Wallpaper Magazine being read by the pool.

As big fans of Instagram and avid users - although, by no measure are we the best photographers - we thought we’d throw out a few tips for what we look for when taking a photo. It was a timely decision too, as Lee Jeans had invited us to their #MoveYourLee launch event at the ever-photogenic Old Street Roundabout.

The first thing to say, is that we’re detail focused people. We tend to steer clear of landscape shots or anything further than ten yards away really. Maybe that’s due to the nature of what we do. We love checking out the small details that make a product, gadget, or artwork all the more special. Other's utilise landscapes so well - try #landscape lovers. For architecture try #brutalism + #architectual.

The old Instagram square suits this perfectly (although, you can now shoot on Instagram in anyway you like), framing a small section of a bigger picture without it feeling like much has been lost. Checkout Mat's favourite hashtags #carcorners + #Soloparking to see what we mean.

Light is really important when shooting on a camera phone. Without a decent flash, you’re not going to capture much detail in the dark and the pics will look very grainy. Plus, brighter photos seem to be far more popular on Instagram - I guess they carry a much more positive vibe. Obviously, make sure the light is behind you too: over-exposed pictures look a bit naff.

As well as detail, we do quite like our angles. Angles in pictures direct the eye and break-up what could be quite a flat, dull image by pulling out and emphasising patterns. Colour too, is important for us. A nice bright colour makes a photo stand out, and definitely fits the vibrant theme we try and maintain on the blog. Also try #patternity.

Finally, we’re always on the lookout for interesting #packagingdesign, signs, or #typography. It’s something we explore in the blog quite regularly, so it’s good to keep a record of the things we stumble across when out-and-about; but, not only that, they just make for great pictures, combining all of the things we look for - detail, angles, and colour.

The World of Levi's Tailoring Shop in Selfridges

When denim news comes a knocking, we can't help but be excited to share. For one week at the start of this December, Levi's is holding a brand new Tailoring Shop, at their newly opened "The World of Levi's" space, in Selfridges London. The pop-up within the Levi's space will give indigo lovers a chance to have their denim items customised by in-house experts; with rip-and-repair, studding, (you may remember their Lot.1 space on Regent Street) patchworking, and leg alterations all on offer.

The tailors will be on-hand to give their advice if you're in the market for a new pair of jeans too, as the space also houses Levi's AW15 collection, Red Tab, the new 501 custom taper collection, Line 8, Made & Crafted, and my personal favourite, Levi's Vintage Clothing. All the denim goodness.

You can find the pop-up Levi’s® Tailor Shop on the first floor of Selfridges London, which runs for one week - from 3rd – 9th December. Selfridges, 400 Oxford Street, London W1A 1AB

Introducing Glints London Eyewear

Generally speaking, the first thing that attracts me to a product is the looks. The rule doesn't always work (the need for a function pays a big role), but most of the time that's what I'm thinking about; be it clothing, food, cars or things like DIY tools + cleaning products. But when that nice looking product is all potatoes and no meat it soon leaves you looking for something else to replace it.

When buying glasses I'm attracted the frames first, and lenses are an after thought. Why is that? Surely the lenses are the most important thing - after all it's our sight we're talking about here. Well, that's not something I'd considered until I visited Glints' newly opened studio in the heart of Mayfair, London.

The idea of having high quality lenses, to go with your well made frames, is something I hadn't (maybe naively) considered. But after discussing with the Glints team about consumer buying patterns, brand loyalty and where quality + price plays its roll, it began to make more sense.

Having spent the afternoon being "schooled" on the art of frame and lens making, and the reasoning behind why Glints decided to aim at the quality-over-trend-driven customer, I was left with the option of trying a pair out for myself.

Wearing - Gresham Glasses c/o Glint | Shirt c/o Triplstitch x Nutsford | Daniel Wellington Watch | Uniqlo Tee | adidas Trainers c/o Mainline Menswear | Albam Socks

The frames are handcrafted in Japan, but the lenses are produced much closer to home, in a small town in Wales. But what makes these lenses better than others? That is a tricky question, and one probably best left for the experts - but I can tell you that they have been manufactured by a company that produces lenses for hi-spec camera + surgical equipment.

The Gresham frames have far surpassed any other pair of glasses I've worn previously. Where the lenses in my Ray-Ban glasses have left me feeling slightly off balance + overly-aware of my surroundings, the Glints' correct my eyesight to a comfortable and sharp level.

I was invited to visit the Glints team, and offered a complimentary pair of frames. This isn't a sponsored post and all opinions within this post are honest and impartial.

Thoughts On Turning Thirty

Last week I turned 30 years old. I'm not sure how that's meant to feel; I don't feel young, yet I don't feel old. Physically I feel better than ever. Priorities have shifted since my uni days, and currently I feel like I'm on the way to arriving somewhere I imagined I'd be (I've just taken the long way around, but can't you really set a deadline for these things?), and long gone are the days when I even can be bothered staying up past 12:30am...

I now feel comfortable knowing that the path I took was a risk, but satisfied knowing that I made the right decision. I didn't go about making a list of things I wanted to achieve before I hit the big 3-Oh - rushing has never been my style. But not to worry, I know I'll tick them off one day.

Turning 30 has reaffirmed that I'm still on the right path. And if I carry on working hard at being the best person that I can be, pushing myself to learn new skills, and surrounding myself with good people, then I'll be able to achieve more than I could have ever imagined.

Thanks to Daniel Wellington for kindly sending me a birthday gift from their new Dapper Collection. You can use the code bucketsandspades to receive 15% off all DW orders.
