Looking Ahead at Fitness Goals for 2015

I've always tried to be an active person. Playing football, running, gym, that sort of thing. When life gets busy, fitness always seems to be the first thing to get squeezed out. At least, that's what I find. 2014 was definitely one of my busiest years so far and with all the food writing I've been doing (that's a lot of calories, you know), it was even more important to stop the squeeze and make fitness a priority.

Setting fitness goals is important if you're going to stop the squeeze. It's even better if one of these goals is an actual event, competition, or specific activity to plan towards. Last year I entered my first Tough Mudder (more on this soon). Now that can't be done without some training. With a new pair of running shoes I set out to up my running game, hitting the ten mile mark (finally), while at the gym I set about building some core strength. Discovering the new climbing wall in Vauxhall definitely helped for that!

It's surprising how motivating it is to have an event to aim for. When my body would usually want to stop, I found myself able to push just that little bit further, knowing that I needed to make constant improvements in time for the big day.

Training with Nike at Wembley

I've also had some help from other folks - advice from friends and even from a couple of brands. Nike in particular helped, giving me the opportunity to learn some new training techniques from the world of NFL at Wembley Stadium. They also threw in some bright new running kit too - which was very welcome indeed.

There's plenty of advice out there. The guys at LiveFit, for instance, have an online platform that links users to personal trainers, sports therapists, and fitness classes in their area. They also offer up advice on nutrition - something I’m definitely going to check out, especially if I agree to do a Tough Mudder again...

This year I need to keep it up and continue to avoid the squeeze on my fitness. I also need to give some thought to the other aspects of fitness, in particular nutrition. Food writing can take its toll on the waistline, if you're not careful, and although I think I eat a fairly balanced diet, I don't really have the knowledge to say that I definitely do. Who knows, perhaps taking some advice would show me a couple of areas to improve on, offer some helpful tips, or change my outlook altogether!

Keep up with the blog to see how both Mat and I get on on the fitness front in 2015. And any advice or tips you have, send it over! All gratefully received. Nik
