Current Fitness Goals + Energy Boosting

Fitness talk is widespread at this time of year so I thought I'd delve into the subject area myself for a change. Don't worry, this post won't be full of motivational speeches, "go get 'em kid" quotes and throwaway advice, rather just a simple breakdown of my current routine and how I plan to achieve my goals.

I've been a member of the local gym for a good five years now but took to taking it more seriously only about eight months ago. I used to pay-per-session but a price hike meant it would be substaintially cheaper to pay monthly, so I went for it. My Jewish roots urge me to make sure I'm getting the best value for money at all times, hence I'm now trying to hit the gym four times per-week to make it worth it! I also can't pretend decent looking fitness gear doesn't make me more motivated, superficially maybe but if I makes you work harder then it's doing its job.

Walking + cycling daily has generally kept my weight down since I was in my late teens, which ultimately has been my downfall. For years felt I was inferior by looking/feeling too skinny, and basically not manly enough for a guy in his mid-to-late 20s. Thanks #menswear world! To put things into perspective, since I was in my late-teens I've weight around 10.5 stone. This leads me nicely to my goals over the past year:

- Gain 1-stone in healthy weight
- Build upper-body strength + muscle
- Increase flexibility/relieve stress with yoga
- Improve cardio with running + cycling
- Eat healthier + more varied foods/drinks

Wearing - Marmot Jacket c/o Blacks, Topman Hoody, H+M T-Shirt, Shorts + Leggings, adidas Energy Boost c/o JD,
 ASOS Wooly Hat, Timex Watch.

With all goals it's a work-in-progress, but the main target I've nailed is the weight gain. The day I wrote this (Monday) the scales read 12.8 stone, which is clearly a huge leap up! The gain is a combination muscle (most noticeably around chest, shoulders + arms) but also because I've been eating more a lot has gone on my stomach! This is the work in progress, cos I'm not giving up beer for nothing! One of the biggest factors in my weight gain has been from buying a decent blender. I blend the mother out of bananas, blueberries + oats on a daily basis, combining them with protein powders, milk (chocolate + full fat), natural honey and a bunch of other fruits + seeds.

I've not had the best luck with protein powders, it's expensive business so I've been sticking to the affordable Pulsin products for the past few months. They're not ideal for muscle/weight gain but it gives me a decent enough hit each day. I'd love to try out some other brands, so if you guys any protein powder recommendations then please do let me know! Rosie's recipe on protein pancakes is also an inventive way of increasing your daily intake.

I'm still getting to grips with yoga, I don't dedicate as much time to it as I'd like to, Hollie in Texas has been giving me advice along every now-and-again. My cardio has improved but I'm still not at the stage where I'm actually enjoying running (cycling is a winner), but I'm determined to stick at it. For the past few weeks I've been running in the new adidas Energy Boost, which are making the experience much more bearable! They're suitable for all types of running and give you supportive and cushioned ride. I keep reminding myself, there's no cutting corners if you want to achieve your goals. I said I wouldn't give any "motivation" advice but this is a good rule to stick by.

So there we have it. I've achieved most of my goals from the past year. I just need to work harder on a few areas and mix up my routine more regularly - Adding more/harder cardio sessions in, work on my core strength and vary the muscle groups I'm hitting. Let's call this P1 of a Fitness Goals series, I'll report back in a few months on my progress! I'd love to find out some of your current fitness goals, any recommendations and how you plan to stick to them over the next few months?

  1. Sounds like you've got a pretty good plan in mind, good luck with it! Right now I'm just swimming once a week and jogging when I can, but it's been really hot lately and I can't run in the heat, haha.

  3. oh my, I have well and truly fallen off the bandwagon with my goals. I lost about 6 stone two years ago and enjoyed being slimmer and healthier so much I've put a stone back on. I took some of your advice you left on one of my posts and have been checking out loads of youtube vids so I can work out for free at home. I'm hoping this combined with more walking and a few healthier choices will get me back on track.

I find pinterest an amazing place for shake ideas.

Good luck and looking forward to reading updates.

  4. I love that last pic! Yay!

I am rubbish with fitness. I have started walking to work (takes me an hour) which is better than nothing. But I just dont like doing quick things so running is just crazy in my head. I am so happy that it is working for you though - I hope you will enjoy it as much as cycling soon.

My bro in law just cannot put on weight at all! He is so thin yet eats like a horse. Apparently the weight sticks a bit more as you get older? Not working for him though. Hiro on the other hand has been on a diet and has been cycling everyday - he loves his Brompton!

  5. Good for you Matt!
Sounds like you are well on your way to reaching your goals :)
I agree with your point about fancy sportswear, if you look the part it definitely helps with motivation.
Looking forward to seeing your results over the next few months, you'll be a muscle mary in no time ;)

  6. Oh, my, those snickers are sooooo cool!
I love foggy days. I guess we have foggy mornings once or twice a year here. =/
I haven't used any protein powder in years. So let me know if you find anything good. =D

  7. Matt on protein powder try myprotein.com for impact whey protein ( I use the diet whey but I'm 15st), it's good value and with semi or skimmed milk tastes better than most products out there. On the running if you get bored of it give yourself a race as a target. Obstacle races are a great laugh and 10km doesn't require a huge amount of training look up the wolf run leamington Spa or www.muckyraces.co.uk as examples. All the best achieving your aims and keep up the great work on the blog.

  9. progress! yay! thanks for the shout out, buddy! it's nice to know we're all human, and struggle from time to time with how we look. seriously though, how boring would earth be if we all looked like robotic fitness models? I much prefer diversity. :) happy weekend, Mat!

  11. ugh I'm not as fit as I used to be, and we're going away soon which would normally involve lots of hiking, my poor old bones are going to suffer this year!

  12. Oh this is so cool, you've got really nice goals set. You get me all pumped to go running again but I haven't done it for so long and I should probably buy new gear for it. I'm more fond of cycling too, and I generally really enjoy pilates and yoga.

  15. We started off with similar goals! I've also been going to Yoga since September and although the instructor still refers to me as a newbie I love that I have noticed a massive increase in flexibility. Also trying to gain healthy weight but relying on food (chicken, eggs etc) for my protein source but it's not always convenient so definitly looking into protein shakes. I find that my nike fuel band is definitely a good motivator and i invested in a decent pair of headphones recently and that makes teh world of difference too! it is excellent hearing that you've met most of your goals, I am hoping by June I will have gained a stone in healthy weight!

I work in a pretty male orientated environment at work and along with football, clubbing and girls they are always mentioning their exercise routines and how to put on weight etc... One of them eats 4000 calories a day and says it's better to stick to protein in food rather than powders which I thought was pretty interesting. I don't think I'd fancy eating those protein shakes to be honest by the looks of them.

I find fruit pretty pricey to buy half the time but I always make sure I have my bananas and apples in! I'd like to try more smoothies though as sometimes it can be a struggle to fit in all your 5 a day during mealtimes, although I tend to just often forget!

I've been looking at running trainers as there's a pretty nice looking park right by where I'll be moving into soon and it'll be a nice way of having something to do rather than staying in my room. I'm just clueless on decent running gear for an affordable price.

Proper happy you've reached your goal of putting on a few pounds, I always find it pretty funny how with girls it's usually the total opposite!
