Visiting San Francisco, Easton, PA + New York

These pages have been a little quiet of late. It feels like a similar situation to June 2017, minus the big Las Vegas wedding! This week will be my second trip over to the US in two weeks, both for separate projects, but both work related. If I was more organised I would have stayed over for the full two weeks, but my last minute budget just didn't allow it. You can officially call me a "super communter" at the moment.

Last week I was visiting San Francisco for the first Pinterest "In The Making" Creative Conference, and this week myself + Jordan will spending five days over in Easton, PA + New York to work on an extra special project - I'll be able to share a little more about that very soon!

My blog will probably stay quiet for a little longer, I'll be creating travel diaries for each place we stop at, but for now if you'd like to see more regular updates from me then I'll still be active on Instagram + Twitter.

Speak soon,
Mat.

Visiting the Jack Daniel's Distillery, Lynchburg, Tennessee

Imagine travelling for 15 hours to spend 48 hours in Tennessee...Jack Daniel's invited me over to exeperience the brand in the way it was intended

A tour of the one and only Jack Daniel's distillery in Lynchburg, followed by a tasting class

Have you heard the story about how the late Mr Jack Daniel never revealed what the iconic no.7 - found on the front of the top selling American whiskey in the world - actually represents? Or how it's always been tradition of the company to gift each employee a bottle Jack along with their monthly pay check? Even more intriguing, the strange and unfortunately circumstances of how the man himself passed away from a freak incident involving a safe?

I was oblivious to all of the above until I had the pleasure of being invited by the Jack Daniel's brand to spend a couple of days in Tennessee, with the aim to discover what makes this globally recognised brand tick, and how they have built up a grass-roots empire from a sleepy town in the middle of nowhere.

The water used in the distilling process comes from within the distillery grounds

I’d hold my hands up and be the first one to say that Jack Daniel’s isn’t a brand I’d generally reach for on the shelves. I've always seem myself as quite open minded when it comes down to it, but I am guilty of overlooking certain things if I don't have some form of connection with them. My obsession with pop culture extends to having an deep appreciation for how brands can become ingrained within daily life - through clever marketing, memorable branding design, familiarity, hard work, and deep down a (usually) honest, homegrown product. Similar to how iconic brands such as McDonald's Coca-Cola, Disney, Apple + Nintendo are all instantly recognisable by the design of their logo, Jack Daniel's is just as synonymous worldwide with whiskey and music.

My whirlwind of weekend - which involved a 15 hour journey from Blackpool to Nashville, one way! - was something I'll never forget. The journey into the depths of Tennessee felt like it was never going to end, but our opened-armed welcome into the sleepy town of Lynchburg, where every single drop of Jack Daniel's whiskey has ever been made, quickly eliminated any tiredness. The air smelt industry-sweet and smiling faces graced every front porch.

A tour of the working distillery was done by our guide, Sam, with an enthusiasm and energy that only our American brothers can seem to achieve - showing us the inner-workings of the process but also emphasising on the finer points of the brand's heritage and infrastructure. For me, these were the moments where the brand started to come alive.

Whipping Post | Revisiting A One-To-Watch

The Whipping Post brand came up in a random conversation the other day and after looking them up (and liking what I saw) I messaged Mat to say we should run a short post on them. Of course, not only had Mat heard of the brand before - but, he'd beaten me to it, covering them back in 2013.

Well, I guess that was a long time ago now, so a revisit is justified.

Whipping Post are a US brand, specialising in leather goods. They mainly produce these great looking totes; but, they also have some other eye-catching bits, such as a leather card case and a wax cotton jacket, which is probably more for Arran Cross than it is for me.

Anyway, it's great to see a brand we covered all those years ago, still going strong.

For more details visit the Whipping Post's website - and make sure to check out their journal and Instagram too.

The Hill-Side Summer 2015

With every day I creep closer to turning 30 I take less of an interest in fleeting flavours of the month, and keep more of a keen eye on brands that will (hopefully) look great whichever year we find ourselves in. We first came across The Hill-Side while researching at uni, and 5/6 years later their gear still brings a smile to my face. Remember these short videos?

For Summer 2015 The Hill-Side totally know the score. The collection is in keeping with the brand's signature style; bold + playful patterns, soft colours and trademark American-weaved fabrics. With a mixture of modern Americana + European-inspired unstructured tailoring, featuring patchwork blazers, matching shirt + tie combos, selvedge denim, block coloured shirts and their latest Japanese-made sneakers, we reckon 2015 is the year we finally pay a visit to The Hill-Side motel. Clever folk aren't they.

The Hill-Side Summer 2015 collection is available at Hickorees.

PF Flyers Made in USA Collection

Being in the USA inevitably means we're more susceptible to the exposure of American things we never knew existed. Goof Off, Krud Kutter, canned pig's feet, Bump Patrol shaving aid...all things we've come across on our daily trips to the local supermarket. A brand I'm a "little more" excited about than a Weed Whacker is PF Flyers, a footwear brand we've been fans of since our teenager years.

They've been working on a new Made in USA collection, produced from their factory in Boston, Massachusetts, featuring their signature Center Hi model, in both black + white leather. Inspired by the original PF Flyers branding from the 1960s, the update features a hand-drawn midsole stripe, hand-stamped tongue branding, and a premium embossed original ankle patch.

PF Flyers has created a short video showcasing this new release, which also celebrates Boston-based businesses who are championing US manufacturing and American-sourced materials. The video features Bully Boy Distillers, Repeat Press, Forestbound Bag Co. + Redemption Tattoo. Let's just hope PF become a little easier to track down in the UK.

Word Notepads by Cool Material

Lots of us buy new notepads every few months, for most of those pages never to be written. Some of us in don't want to "spoil" them because they're too good looking. Bit sad really, they never get to fulfil the one job they've been given. Not these handy Word Notepads by Cool Material - in fact, it's quite the opposite.

These little 3.5" x 5.5"s deserved to be battered and bruise; scribbled in, tossed around, sat on, ripped out, handed around, stained with beer, soaked in swimming shorts and filled with future world-conquering ideas.

Changing the world not really your bag? Several rounds of Noughts + Crosses will do just fine, they'd be happy with that. Available at Cool Material here.

All Over Shorts by Olivers Apparel

The crossover between sports and casual – or "ath-leisure" as some call it – has been one that's been happening for as long as I can remember. How can you go from a workout, or cycle for example, to a coffee shop without feeling like you're wearing your tatty school sports kit? I have nothing against sportswear, quite the opposite actually – my love of sportswear has grown to crazy levels while in my twenties – but if there's a way I can make the transition from a-to-b a little less "sporty" then it will grab my attention.

Olivers Apparel is doing something pretty cool. They've designed a pair of shorts that can seemingly tackle most sports + fitness / rec, but also wouldn't look out of place on your daily commute (or pretending to be working at your local coffee establishment). The All Over Short is the brand's signature product; a pair versatile shorts, made from lightweight but durable 4-way stretch fabric, with a modern tailored fit. Water repellent too, so the filter coffee will run right off...

This week Olivers Apparel released their All Over Shorts in a new set of colours. The "Summer Classics" of orange, purple + cobalt, now join the original black, grey green + copper. I've been wearing a pair of the cedar green shorts for a month or two now, and I've been really impressed with their versatility, between indoor rock climbing, gym sessions, cycling and travel.

The All Over Shorts are handmade in California, and are finished off nicely with a paracord drawstring and contrasting mesh pockets. Stick me down for a second pair!
