Glasgow: Part 1

Here's a selection of photos I took when we were up in Glasgow a couple of weeks ago.
We didn't do much shopping but we weren't going to miss a chance to visit COS, saw this statue on our way there. Anyone know anything about this?
In the entrance of the GoMA, no photographs beyond this point
I did sneak a couple though, this neon sign was my pretty sweet
Quite rest to check directions at George Square. The food wasn't mine but I did like the design
Really cool sculpture on a street, couldn't see any details on this
This was the scene on many of the streets in Glasgow, lots of redevelopment and unoccupied buildings. I wasn't expecting much urban decay but we got it. Check out the old emergency exit on the left
The building stood out a mile against, as white as you like. Any ideas what it is?
Enjoying Prawn Linguine at Jamie's Italian, Hollie had the same
War memorial outside the Grand Central hotel
We had at the Filling Station both mornings, eggs on toast twice
Headed down to the West End to check out the scene. Filled with narrow alleys and sidestreets
One of my highlights, I trip to Kelvingrove Museum located in the West End. This sign intrigued me, everything exhibited goes past this point!
Really cool installation, a series of floating heads dangled from the ceiling in the main hall. Again I didn't find out much about this but Hollie was fascinated by it
Kelvingrove Museum was a kids dream, animals, spitfires, machinery, you name it this place had it. If I ever go back to Glasgow I will devote more time to this place. They even had a Dali
Comfy shoes and a sensible jacket is clever attire in Scotland
My first Bearbick, I didn't get it at first but I can see why people get obsessed with them. We bought a few at streetwear and art store, Fat Budda. The staff were excellent here, so enthusiastic about their stock and had time to chat for at least 15 minutes.

Well there we go, that's Glasgow Part 1. We only went for 3 days but I already want to go back and explore all over again. It's only 3 hours away from were I live and if you're savvy you can get some really cheap trains so it's defiantly on the cards for the future. So does anyone know what any of these places are that I mentioned and has anyone else been to Glasgow? I'm all ears.

  1. Hey - so glad you guys enjoyed Glasgow! I love reading posts like this, makes me fall in love with my hometown a bit more.

The sculpture in the Princes Square courtyard is by Glasgow artist Shona Kinloch, who has loads dotted around the city, East Kilbride and Kilmarnock too.

As far as I know the floating heads in Kelvingrove was curated and produced inhouse as part of the recent makeover of the museum (here's an interesting article about it http://www.creativematch.com/news/floating-heads-of-kelvingrove-signify/92612/) but it's definitely one of KG's most popular attractions.

The white building on Ingram Street is Hutcheson's Hall, designed by the famous Scottish architect David Hamilton, and was originally a hospital apparently! I think you can go in and have a nosey but I'm ashamed to say I've never gone in!

ANYWAY if you come back I'd recommend you take a swatch at the Necropolis, The Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery at Glasgow Uni, and the new Transport Museum and maybe the Science Centre too.

    Jeeze, what a Glasgow nerd...

  6. I can't believe you're only three hours from there! I'm sure I've said this here before, my family's heritage is Scottish/Irish/English, so I'm fascinated with these bits of Scotland. The hanging heads are so neat!

  12. What a delightful post! As someone who's never been to Glasgow - LONGING to (Never been to Scotland, even- altho I did write my first screenplay based on a Scottish island in the 1960s, don't ask why) - so, curious, I googled 'sculptures, Glasgow' - found George's Square, which upon further reading in your post, you were there, too - then tried 'sculpture, naked green man,' and got this:

    http://scienceonstreets.phys.strath.ac.uk/new/James_Watt.html

which interestingly (to me) included James Watt going into business with one MATTHEW Boulton.. also was employed by a William MURDOCH (making high pressure steam engines), but alas, Watt was also 'a rather insecure and jealous man', which is tied in with the email I shall be sending.

I love how Hollie (who sounds - and looks - so beautiful and cool) is kind of your mysterious muse/companion in these posts. 'Hollie had the linguine, too' - she's like AA Gill's Blonde.

I'm intrigued by these heads too! And hat's off to Kirsty for explaining the true facts: I should have checked the comments before opening my big fat mouth.

  16. Ah man I always forget about the Kelvingrove Museum! I had the name of the guy who did the floating heads thing, if I find it I'll let you know.

Down that little alley with the signs (in the West End I think) there are some of the best Vintage shops in Glasgow, you have to sort of squirrel around & go through unsuspecting doors, but there's like a whole arcade thing in there with loads of weird shops as well. Around that area too, where the cobbles are there's this really lovely small cinema that I went to see that new Cohen Brother film in. I forget the road but it's around there somewhere! Haha.

Also I'd recommend the Lighthouse museum, it's architecture but the exhibitions were good (it's off the main street, almost opposite the side street for GOMA) & also the Riverside Museum, there are buses from the centre of Glasgow.

& by the Merchant city (or something with Merchant in it) there's a really nice restaurant called Italian Caffe (& Italian Kitchen) which do proper good Italian food...

There are some really good gig spaces around Glasgow as well if you're into that. I don't know any of their names but most of them are off Buchanan street. If you wonder about on a weekday you usually run into some band night which is pretty good!

I've been to Glasgow once when I was about 10 years old, so I was more excited by the arcades than what Glashow really had to offer! Some really cool pieces of artwork you've snapped though, esp the floating heads! It instantly made me think of Marc Quinn's 'blood head' (http://www.thedevilsdemons.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/blood_head.jpg) made from his own blood over a period of time! Some artists have wacky ideas but I usually find them the most interesting.

You and Hollie are looking great too, I really like her silver shoes! very cool.

  20. OK I need you to explain the whole bearbrick phenomenon. What's it all about?

If I were in your shoes I'd be hopping on that train all the time!
