North Carolina based designer and illustrator Matt Stevens was commissioned by Nike Sportswear to create a series illustrations showcasing some of the most iconic Airmax releases. Nike were so impressed with the outcome they created a physical installation on their Soho, NYC store. A fine example of how to grab a company's attention, if you have a good idea then just run with it.

Nike Free 2014 Collection | Presenting a Decade of Development

nike free run 2014, nike sportswear, nike event london, nike free review, mens fashion blog

As a moderate runner (or perhaps ‘jogger’ is a better description) I’ve been coveting some Nike running shoes for a while, so the opportunity to hear a talk on the 2014 Nike Free collection from their Vice President and Creative Director - Sean McDowell - was too good to miss.

A basement in Central London doesn’t seem the most natural place for an exhibition of running shoes. Three flights of concrete stairs down into a dimly lit Victorian warren, the only sign that this was the right place came from the wristband given at the door and the two girls comparing running injuries on the stairs.

As usual, Nike had gone to town. This was part exhibition, part art installation, part nightclub. The bright, almost psychedelic, colours that have become synonymous with Nike’s running shoes illuminated the walls between each dark corner. Pairs of trainers hung from the ceiling in patterns emulating a running stride alongside a strange set of oddly-shaped plaster cast feet. A homage to the hexagon played out on every stage.

nike free run 2014, nike sportswear, nike event london, nike free review, mens fashion blog

The relevance of the hexagons became clear during Sean McDowell’s talk. Nike’s focus on natural motion has seen every element of their running shoes altered, changed, and adapted to support the natural movement of the human foot. With Nike Free, this change is particularly noticeable in the make-up of sole, which has evolved from their ‘ice-cube tray’ mould (first developed by pouring rubber into a waffle iron, apparently) to the hexagonal flex grooves of their latest shoe.

This development allows the trainers to bend in more than one direction at once, moving with your individual stride, rather than forcing your foot to move in a particular way, and so making the shoe suitable for runners of every kind.

nike free run 2014, nike sportswear, nike event london, nike free review, mens fashion blog

It’s clear from such a detailed presentation that Nike are investing time and effort to research and understand the needs of runners, with examples given of the inspiration they have taken from both professional and grassroots athletics around the world. While the talk went on, the developments and innovations of the past decade were passed around the room, with some testing and probing questions being fired back at Sean McDowell - most so technical that they were lost on me.

Of course, development never stops with running technology and improvements can still be made. There was an admittance of issues with past Nike Free trainers, particularly a lack of rain protection when the original Flyknit material was used in the shoes - a problem apparently now resolved. There were also interesting insights into the future; for instance, the idea that all Nike stores will offer custom measuring services for running shoes, a service currently available for pro athletes only.

nike free run 2014, nike sportswear, nike event london, nike free review, mens fashion blog

After the talks had finished, an organised run was available for those interested. Strangely, most people were - I was content with the prosecco and prosciutto at the bar.

Hopefully in the next couple of months I’ll get myself a pair of Nike Free 5.0 - this brand new pair to be precise. Does anyone already have a pair? If so, what’s the verdict? - Nik

Year by year by room is increasingly looking like a well stocked trainer shop, but as a collection is never really finished I took the opportunity to pick up these Nike Pegasus 83 c/o Mainline Menswear. Much more casual than my usual sporty choice, the Nike Pegasus have been re-issued to mark the model's 30th anniversary. As I'm too young to have caught them the first time around I thought I'd see why all the trainer heads were so excited. There was a lot of hype around the whole Pegasus Collection launch around a month or so ago.

My initial reaction to the Pegasus 83 when I pulled them out of the newly re-designed Nike box was that they're a lot chunkier than I was expecting. It's partly due to me only ever really wearing sneakers like Converse or more sportier style in a Nike Free Run. The Pegasus was originally designed as a running trainer but has been given the old premium streetwear treatment, in this really nice deep read suede colourway.

I've been wearing these on-and-off for a couple of weeks now and so far so good, in terms of comfort they're not a Free Run, but that's to be expected. Cushioning around the ankle gives a great amount of support, which is especially good if you're on your feet all day. A peeve would be that they're not incredibly breathable. But to end on a plus the Waffle Sole makes for great grip if the tarmac is wet.

As I said I've been wearing them frequantly for around two weeks, my overall thoughts are positive towards them. Bearing that in mind here's a quick summery:

Pros - Lightweight, perfect for every day // Good traction on the sole // Versatile colourway
Cons - Slightly chunkier style // Could be more breathable // Suede's a no-go in the rain

I had fun going nuts on a pair of Nike Roshe Run at the ASOS HQ a few months back, and they finally arrived! We were lucky enough to get a super late invite to meet the Nike and Pendleton teams, where we explored the endless outcomes of their new iD range. It's always temping to go over the top with stuff like this - 'Pimp My Ride' style - adding way too many colours, bright fabrics and regrettable name tagging, but for their new collaboration the focus is on Pendleton's rich fabric archive.

For my pair I chose to go with the familiar Blackwatch Tartan and durable nylon navy on the upper, with a complimentary(ish) green Swoosh and golden yellow accents. In my head it sounds a little much but I actually couldn't be happier with the results. So Wrong it's Right...?

The soon to be released Nike Flyknit Air Max caught my eye this week, but in particular, it was the soles that I couldn't get out of my head. They're like a cross between Jelly Babies and ice cube trays, which is a bit off track, but it then got my thinking about the possibility of fully customiseable soles. Is this even a thing? If it's not then I could see it working in a similar way to the images above, different colours and patterns. What do you reckon, good idea?

The Flyknit Air Max brings together the super cushioning technology of the original Airmax and supportive, breathable and lightweight characteristics of the Flyknit. The upper features their Flywire lacing system, which add extra and stability (as seen on my Flyknit Lunar1+ outfit post a few weeks ago). Two of the soles above also belong to the AirMax 2014.

It seems like everyone's going crazy for the customisable vibes at the moment, I can definitely see the appeal though. It's a chance for adults to get back to their teenage roots without having to doodle on their backpacks! I came across this post on Style of Sport (really nice blog, well worth checking out) the other day talking about the variety of products available to customise, there's even swimming goggles on there! What's next?

The Nike Flyknit Airmax will be available from January 3rd, 2014, read more here.

Nike FuelBand Review | Motivation for an Active Lifestyle

nike fuelband review, nike fitness, nike sportswear review, fittness blog, mens lifestyle blog, sports fashion, sportswearnike fuelband review, nike fitness, nike sportswear review, fittness blog, mens lifestyle blog, sports fashion, sportswear

For the past couple of weeks, I’ve (Nik) been wearing a Nike FuelBand. Religiously. The time it’s spent off my arm can probably be counted in minutes, rather than hours - and that includes recharging, which is ludicrously fast. There it’s sat, a sleek black band on my wrist, as discreet as any watch, measuring the intensity of my movement and recording this as NikeFuel points. The idea being to set a target of intensity each day and beat this target. I’m currently aiming for 3,000 points, and have achieved that in five of the last seven days.

The key to the FuelBand is simplicity, not just in design, but in function and use. A single button allows you to toggle through NikeFuel points, time, and hours ‘won’, with the LED display merging seamlessly with the black of the band when not lit. Using BlueTooth, the band transmits data to a very slick smartphone app. The app can be used to alter the settings of the band, but it’s primary function is to display a whole range of stats relating to your intensity (including calories spent and steps taken) over time, vs the general population, and vs your friends. The app also allows you to tag sessions so that your performance at certain activities (e.g. running, gym, or football) can be compared independently from the rest of your daily movement.

I’m not a serious athlete, attending the gym and running three or four times a week, but even so I quickly noticed some failings with the FuelBand. Certain activities - rowing and cycling, for instance - don’t seem to register many Fuel points, presumably as my arm is fairly stable during these exercises. You can easily cheat, with ten minutes in the pub racking up a large number of points once a couple of people had taken turns to throw the FuelBand in the air.

And, then there is the ‘black box’ nature of Fuel points: as Nike won’t explain how they are calculated, the seemingly arbitrary nature of the points make it difficult to use as a scientific tool for serious training.
nike fuelband review, nike fitness, nike sportswear review, fittness blog, mens lifestyle blog, sports fashion, sportswear

I think these criticisms are slightly unfair, however. The Nike FuelBand is really an everyday motivational tool for measuring how active your lifestyle is and encouraging you to move more, rather than a serious training tool. And it really does work. Within a day of wearing the band I found myself changing my mindset, jogging up the escalator (or better yet, the stairs) on the way to the office, walking further to buy my lunch, and attempting to run for a couple more minutes, all to clock up just a few more Fuel points. In just a week, I’ve increased my target, increased the number of Fuel points I score each day, and therefore increased my activity levels.

The app is a really good way of keeping track of various exercises you do and how much effort you’re putting in each time - it’s surprising just how many times I don’t run quite as hard as I think I do. Also, the social element of seeing others activity levels and competing against or with each other would be brilliant, if I had more friends with FuelBands.

Unfortunately, given that my only friend with one is a marathon runner, I tend not to look at her score very often. If anyone out there has a FuelBand, look me up! Here's a short video which shows how the FuelBand works. Have any of you tried the Fuelband, if so has it managed to keep you motivated?

p.s Rumours about that Nike might be pulling back on production of the FuelBand itself; however, strong ties between Nike and Apple suggest Apple's new wearable devices could include a Fuel element. Exciting stuff! - Nik

Fitness Goals | Six Month Update

nike lunarglide 6 2014 white, mens running trainers, nike new release 2014, nike lunarglide review, menswear blog

Some of you may remember my Fitness Goals post from a a few months back, well it's been just under six months so I thought it would be the perfect time to do a short progress update - checking in to see if I've reached my targets.  Here's a simple breakdown my previous goals and if I've achieved them:

- Gain 1-stone in healthy weight | I did but I ended up putting fat on too
- Build upper-body strength + muscle | Making progress each month
- Increase flexibility/relieve stress with yoga | Every day for six months, but slipped recently
- Improve cardio with running + cycling | Yes Yes Yes, been cycling 20ish miles a week
- Eat healthier + more varied foods/drinks | Still in progress. Enjoying more salads

nike lunarglide 6 2014 white, mens running trainers, nike new release 2014, nike lunarglide review, menswear blog, albam athletic sweatshirt Wearing - Albam Sweatshirt | H&M Sport Shorts | Timex Weekender Watch | Nike Socks | Nike Lunarglide 6 c/o Nike

When we last checked in I was tipping the scales at 12.8 stone, after aiming to put on healthy weight and gain a bit of size. Well a couple of months down the road I realised that even though I was gaining muscle I was starting to feel pretty porky around the middle. You know, favourite shirts were getting tighter.....I knew I needed to step up my cardio game if I was going to burn off all the beer, burgers + cakes. Damn Hollie being such a keen baker!

I discussed my issues with the trainer at the gym and they set me up with a more cardio-heavy routine, aiming for 25 minutes each session plus an extra session (making it up to five sessions per week if I can make it), which concentrates on cardio and arms only. I've been on this for about two months now and I've dropped down to around 12 stone, loosing a bit of fat around the "problem areas" without loosing too much muscle. For the past few weeks I've been running in the new Nike Lunarglide 6, but still, I'm not enjoying running as much as cycling! Which leads me on nicely to some new goals:

- Cycle 20 miles per week + 25 minutes cardio each workout
- Carry on with daily yoga to help with flexibility + well being
- Continue to build upper-body strength + muscle
- Tone up stomach, sides + legs
- Be more adventurous + varied with food

Sports Nutrition

I've been trying out various brands and products for a while and it's a majorly confusing subject. Here's a few products I've been trying over the past 6 months:

I stumbled across GoNutrition on a recommendation via Twitter, but I can't for the life of me remember who suggested it. They have a decent looking website and get good reviews so I thought it was worth a shot. I've been using a their Whey Protien 80 for a couple of months now and I've been impressed. It tastes great and mixes like no other and definitely helps recovery after my workouts. Tastes great in smooties or just with water (as recommended).

nike lunarglide 6 2014 white, mens running trainers, nike new release 2014, nike lunarglide review, menswear blog, albam grey sweatshirt

Since March I've also been trying out few products c/o the people at MaxiNutrition (formality MaxiMuscle). First  I gave Cyclone a bash, which is designed to increase muscle Size + Strength. This stuff worked pretty quickly, within two weeks I was seeing results in both size but mostly strength. Ultimately, it did make me put weight on both my muscles and stomach so I slowed my intake down and gradually increased my cardio.

Following on the team suggested I try their Promax Lean, to help me drop a few pounds and tone up. Again I saw results within two weeks, which if I'm honest I was slightly alarmed at the rate I was loosing weight; so again I decreased my intake to try balance things out once again. In terms of how both GoNutrition + MaxiNutrition mixed and tasted I'd say GoNutrition has the edge for me, and being more affordable I'm more inclined to stick with them in the future.

I'm really keen to keep up with my new cardio routine and weekly cycling, as well as bringing a new indoor rock climbing or yoga class into the mix - and continuing on with core strength, building muscle and toning up. I'd love to find out how your current fitness goals have been progressing this year and how you've found things over the Summer months?

We welcome a new member to the Buckets + Spades team, greetings to Nik and his first post - Today he's discussing the art of finding the right gym kit.

Two or three times a week I run, and as I find the red button on a treadmill far too tempting to press, I run outside. This calls for proper running shoes that fit my wide (read ‘fat’) feet properly. Asics fit perfectly, although I’ve just discovered that Nike offer a wide option on all of their running shoes too, so I may be switching next time. This winter though, being wet and miserable, I’ve retreated indoors to the gym and started to visit a little more often to concentrate on (light) weights and some rowing.

Trips to the gym don’t require the same kit as running outdoors - ClimaCool, Heattech, and the like aren’t essential, so I tend to invest in some low-cost, great value stuff like the adidas Trefoil Addity Tee and Nike Foundation Fleece Track Pants. Trainers, as well, need to be comfortable and hard-wearing, rather than light-weight and supportive: a pair of Reebok or New Balance Classics do the job.

I do have one indulgence though, a loopback zip hoody from Sunspel. Not something I want drenched in sweat, but nice to throw over my shoulders after a session. And of course, a trip to the gym isn’t complete without the essential timepiece: a classic Casio.

I’m sure some people disagree with spending any money on clothes for the gym. A friend of mine has worn the same running t-shirt for the past five years and, until recently, my top of choice was a ‘borrowed’ jumper from the Manchester City catering department.

I’d be interested to hear what other people think, what do you guys wear for keeping fit?

I'm pretty sure I like these/I totally hate them. Ok they flipping rock, well actually I can't make up my mind. By the time I've finished writing this I will have decided which side of the fence I fall on. All I know for sure is that they're a really interestingly designed piece of footwear, something which usually has its own glass cabinet The Nike Free Woven 4.0's upper is woven with thread in several tonal shades, which ends up creating a close fitting supportive sock. Perfect for running as much as they are for down the pub.

One part retirement slipper to two parts madman, they're definitely a marmite trainer. Well I've convinced myself, I bloody love them.

My own style has been leaning more and more towards Sportswear for a good while now. I put this down to me actually trying to keep fit and exercise on a regular basis and also heavily influenced by an  increasing interest in sports technology and innovations. Nike is an extremely aspiration company for me, their constant push and drive to help people succeed, without getting to blogged down with heritage is something which I am very much on board with. For further reading check out Susie and Steve's post about their recent trip to the Nike HQ in Oregon, what a dream that would be!

I was very kindly send these pair of Nike Flyknit Lunar 1+ by JD Sports and I've been putting them through their paces for the past week. Although I'm wearing them in a more everyday way here I've taken them out for a proper spin and will carry on doing so over the next few months. After a couple of minutes of light jogging around the local park I noticed that their supportive quality was leagues ahead of their little brother, the Nike Free Run (which I have been running in for 2 years), so I'm inclined to say these would be more suited for run longer distances. I wouldn't say either of them are comfier, but  due to the Flyknit's unique construction and technology they're super lightweight, structured and fit like a glove.

Weekend Bucket List

Man comes home to find his house has been re-plumbed with beer, imagine that?
Some really good examples of Dublin Street Style.
Hollie and I recently visited Thorpe Park.
Nike Free Hyperfeel: Inside the Design.
An action figure that's kind of a big deal.

Enjoy your weekend folks, I'm off to another Classic Car/Hotrod show. Any plans?
