An Introduction to 4K Photo with LUMIX

I've strolled on into my thirties without really looking back. "They" say each decade just gets better, well this one's off to a pretty sweet start, as I'm very excited to share that I've been made one of the new Brand Ambassadors for Panasonic Lumix UK

I didn't see that coming, and I sure feel a little out of depth with it right now, but the next few months are set to be very rewarding indeed. I've been given some lovely new kit to use, and I'm currently fiddling my way around the setting menu. Panasonic isn't completely alien to me though, I've been using the LUMIX GX7 for a couple of years, but now I'll also be using the LX100. The main feature of the LX100 is its 4K Photography capabilities, and this is where my new skills will kick in.

What is 4K Photography?

Simply put, 4K Photography captures high quality video, which enables you to extract individual frames of that recording as high resolution photographs. Post-production gives you the ability to watch your videos back frame-by-frame, capturing up to 30 photos per second. Each  hi-res frame is then ready to transfer to your chosen devise.

The main advantage of the 4K technology is that when shooting you'll never miss that killer shot, lose that moment of spontaneity, or capture that unexpected occurrence. Just writing about it fills my mind with the possibilities! You can learn more about how 4K Photo works here.

My first attempt (above) at using 4K Photo was at Federal Cafe in Manchester I was blown away by its ability to pick up the falling salt + capturing each individual movements.

My role as Brand Ambassador is to help showcase the capabilities of Lumix's 4K Photo, and over the next few months that's exactly what I'll be doing. My aim is to attend interesting events, say yes to more opportunities (which in the past may have been out of my depth), plan road trips, experience new activities, and push myself to get the best out of the LX100.

I've only started to scratch the surface with the LX100, as it's unfarmiliar ground (I'd like to work on composition, colour and depth), but up to now it's so-good-so-far. In this post there is a selection of shots I've extracted from the 4K video option; helping me capture those key frames I'd have struggled to catch on my regular DSLR. I definitely haven't pushed the camera to its full potentially yet, but it's early days, and over the next few months I'll strive to capture some really exciting and special moments. I've got to think in movement from now on!

So what's next? These next few month I'm planning to visit a car rallies, follow a furniture designer for a day, visit a the new Haus of Vans in Manchester, get out a road trip, visit a national park, hopefully gets some time outside of the UK...anything that comes my way you'll be sure to find my camera hung around my neck.

So if you follow me on Twitter + Instagram whenever you see the #4KPhoto hashtag you'll know I've been out and about, doing my best to capture those moments I may otherwise have missed. I'm really intrigued to see where this may lead me. Let's get shooting!

Any recommendations for interesting events or activities to attend? I'd love to hear them.

  1. You've just made me add yet another camera to my 'want list'. The quality of that salt falling shot (and the coffee pouring shot) is amazing! Ah and I'm yet to visit Federal since it changed over from Sunshine Bistro but your shots certainly make the food look delicious so I guess I need to try it out.

  28. Quite a bit actually. Contemporary worship services (low, changing light, sermon, as well as in-sanctuary events. Then we have supplemental testimonials we do. It's shared across our webcast and it's our first time reaching for such quality. If you can't tell, I'm pretty excited! :-)
