Bike Shelf @ Gowanus Furniture Co.

I'm in the market for a bike, have been for a couple of years but in the last couple of weeks I've started to take it seriousl. In an ideal world I'd go for a single speed bike as they just look miles nice but for practical reasons it's looking like I'll be buying a hybrid. It's proving tricky to find a nice looking one that I'm 100% happy with but I'm getting there. Suggestions are welcome people!

In my search for bikes online I've come across lots of gadget and fixtures but this wall mounted wooden shelf by TreeHouse was one of the only things that made me go "whoa cool". It's giving me ideas for a DIY project too, though I won't start a new one till I finish the previous. I'm not going down that road again.

Hard wood bike shelf available at Gowanus Furniture Co.

Enjoy your weekend guys (We didn't make it to the antiques fair last week, the weather was a washout. Ended up with fish & chips in the pub!).

  2. whoah!!! this is genius! we used to leave our bike outside the house and it got destroyed by the rain. :( really sad.

  3. What a cool idea. Sadly my bike (old, battered, but dearly loved) wouldn't fit into it, as it's not a man's speed bike. No advice on makers, but in my experience it's better to have the bike look a bit old and neglected - less attractive to thieves than a shiny new one.

  5. Ooh this is great! Really need something like this to de-clutter the hallway of doom a bit - nearly bought the Ikea bike hooks but realized you would have to remove either the peddles or handlebars (i think) which is a pain!

Bike wise there is a great little shop in Finsbury park i'm fond of browsing: http://sargentandco.com/for_sale.htm

I have a ton of ideas for projects that'll keep me busy but like you mentioned, you start one before finishing the previous and it's a bad cycle to get into! The shelf looks sweet though. Reminds me of a photograph I saw where bikes were attached to the wall as part of a display! ...wish I could find it again!

Shame to hear about the antiques, I went to Bristol bank holiday monday, was planning on taking photos but because of the mad rain/wind combo it was pretty pointless!

  9. I've seen pictures of this around and it's nice to find the original source to read up on it. Although I feel the price range is a bit to high. and by a bit i mean a lot. haha. would be killer to have this or something alike.
I wouldn't necessarily go with a hybrid. But that's just cause I think they're ugly.
Why not a just a ten speed? Is there any vintage road bike shops over there? There's one here with a great selection at pretty reasonable prices. I'm tempted to get one.
Maybe look into getting a cyclocross bike?

I stopped by a shop over here that carried masi's and they were solid. I really wanted one. The price was a bit steep though. But I think you can get an idea on the type of bike. They're nice too because they have a bit wider tires with knobbies rather then a road bike with just some skinny close to slick tires. So you'd be able to take them off road if you wanted.
Gears are really nice too, but I really love riding fixed. You could always go fixed or single speed and get a smaller front sprocket (just a few teeth smaller) which will make it easier to pedal and get around. Although you won't be able to go as fast but personally, I think it's kinda dumb to go bombing down a hill. It's just to dangerous. haha. Fixies are fun to because you can learn wheelies and how to ride backwards and stuff. So it's a pretty good form of transportations but you can also goof around with some trickery.

  10. This is awesome Mat!
Do you reckon you could really make this? The cut out seems tricky to me! I remember my dad used to drill in sticks to the wall to hang his bike up and I always thought it was terrifying haha
always assumed it would fall down!
    Lovely blog header btw! xxx

  12. I've been ummmmhing and aaahing on whether I should invest in a good bike forever now, the thing that puts me off is the lack of decent cycling routes where I live, it's an absolute nightmare..

This is a very clever piece of furniture, I like!

  14. Wow, that is a really clever product! I've got quite few cycling-mad friends and I'd definitely recommend this to them. The wood looks really nice so it would be the part of the decoration rather than an obstruction

  15. If we didn't have the shoe rack in the passage, I think I'd get Baz one of these. Such a stunning design ( simple but cool) and a great idea!

  16. Hey you guys should. It would be interesting to see what you come up with.

The bike you sent me doesn't look to bad actually. Is it a lot? Cause in USD it would be about double that price.
Make sure you test ride it if you can. It's always good to see what's comfortable and feels good. Sizing gets a bit tricky sometimes.

    Check out www.citygrounds.com
they have some fixies on sale so maybe you will just want to get two bikes?
I'll look around online and see if I come across any cool cyclocross or hybrid bikes for ya.
