The Artist Series by Word Notebooks

Those serial stationery pushers at Word have just released a new Artist Series, in which they invited four up-and-coming designers to reinterpretate their US-made pocket notepads. Word always try to breathe a little extra life into the humble, everyday notepad, and this new colourful series makes a welcome change from the regular 3.5 x 5.5s.

The Artist Series by Word is available here.

A Conversation with Ollie Aplin of Mind Journal

I mentioned recently that I find the act of physically writing things down helps with my organisational skills, but also to clear my head of all the things buzzing around. Note taking is one of the ways I cope with dyslexic, as I never feel totally happy until I see the ink on the paper - be that a plan for a project, or a daily to-do list.

For someone like me, Mind Journal is a project that speaks volumes. I caught up with Ollie Aplin, the Brighton-based graphic designer behind the Kickstarter which aims to reach out to those who have experienced issues which we normally keep to ourselves.

-----

Mat - As a freelance writer I’ve always been interesting in words, but the idea of journalling isn’t something I’ve taken too. Could you explain a little bit about the idea behind the Mind Journal?

Ollie Aplin of Mind Journal - There’s a big difference between writing for a reason and journaling for an unseen meaning. Well, at least that’s how I see it. It’s like walking to the shops vs. walking along the beach. One is for a reason - you need to get to the shops. But you walk along the beach because it makes you feel good. That's the challenge I face and have learned many others face when it comes to journaling. I write all day, be it emails, proposals, or copy for web design. Why would I then want to write again, and what would I write about?

The idea behind Mind Journal is to take all the frustration and confusion associated with journaling, and to simplify it into a set of manageable tasks. Blank pages are notoriously difficult to fill. Mind Journal is not blank, therefore some of the work has already been done for you.

There is a real pressure on guys in today’s society to look a certain way, to perform at an increasing capacity, and to cope unfaded, without question. And there’s a ton of tools on the market to help with this; gyms, nutrition supplements, productivity apps etc...

But there is nothing to help guys cope with their mental welfare. This is where Mind Journal becomes powerful. Its stripped-back approach does away with any doubt or scepticism. It's for the modern, everyday guy that doesn’t meditate or do yoga — the guy that believes in the power of simple things and simple solutions.

Brass Metalwork Ruler by Tom Pigeon + Weekend Links

Simple, playful and purposeful design here, by Tom Pigeon. This 15cm solid brass ruler grabs inspiration from school woodwork classes, and traditional tools. Crafted up in the West Coast of Scotland, and designed to age over time. Nothing groundbreaking, but then, a ruler doesn't need to be.

Enjoy the weekend, folks! After a hectic week I'm looking for nothing more than a quiet chill.

Keeping the Flow | Thinking Better with Parker

Words were never my strong point, and with the aim to improve on that weakness I started Buckets & Spades back in 2008, to try to brush up my language skills and creative writing. Over the years I've become used to using a pen to jot down my thoughts daily; through endless notetaking, and organising my life using a diary. I actually have a love/hate relationship with words, as I find it all-to-easy to compare myself to the whitty and expressive folk I come across in magazines + on Twitter. This doesn't come from a place of jealous, far from it, as it inspires my writing style to be more open and natural.

I find Yasumi's unique perspective on life, and the way she tackles words to be hugely inspiring.

One constant throughout my whole growing up was having to write things down, as a way of collecting my thoughts, relaying ideas and organising my life. This is one side of modern technology that Apple hasn't been able to affect; I need a pen, notebook and diary to feel like I'm on top of accomplishing the day's tasks, and never leave the house without them. I make a to-do list every single day, and when the day is finally over I look back at my diary to make sure I'm set for the day ahead. There's also the odd doddle thrown in (Hollie didn't appreciate the Picaso-inspired drawing of her...), of ideas that pop into my head, intriguing things I see on my travels, or ideas for outfit combinations.

The Better Thinking campaign by Parker got me questioning just how important the humble pen is to my life, and how invaluable it is to my own personal experiences. For me, a beautiful pen is as important as the thoughts themselves. And Parker is helping us unlock a better way of thinking; by helping us discover exciting ways to create new content, and to keep our ideas fresh.

Giveaway | Win B&S January Package

It’s easy to lose track of how much you’re spending when out shopping for things you love. Whether it’s a jacket you’ve had bookmarked since before Christmas or an impulse purchase on the way to the till, your tightly controlled budget can quickly be forgotten – and this happens just as much online as it does in shops.

With months of darker, colder evenings ahead, it can becomes all too easy for your energy bills to rise far beyond the expected – especially as there’s no price tag to keep you in check.  So, I wanted to show you how difficult it can be to keep a track of your spending without any idea of how much things cost.

With a little help from E.ON we've chosen a selection of items from across several of our favourite brands, for our latest giveaway. But what we want you to do is tell us just how much you think the total price comes to?

How Much Is All This Worth? The Monocle Guide to Cosy Homes, Honest Skincare candle, Field Notes note pad x3, Form & Thread socks x3, Aesop handcream, Timex Weekender watch, Coco Chocolatier bar x3.

The closest to the correct total will win all of the goodies while, for everyone else, it may be a good time to start thinking about ways to keep an eye on your spending. Thankfully, for those of you wanting to get a grip on how much you spend on energy, help is at hand. E.ONs smart pay as you go meter allows you to keep tight control on how much you spend on energy, by showing exactly how much you’re using in real time.

All of which means you’ll have some extra cash to spend on the things you really love. This one is open to UK only. Good luck!

Word Notepads by Cool Material

Lots of us buy new notepads every few months, for most of those pages never to be written. Some of us in don't want to "spoil" them because they're too good looking. Bit sad really, they never get to fulfil the one job they've been given. Not these handy Word Notepads by Cool Material - in fact, it's quite the opposite.

These little 3.5" x 5.5"s deserved to be battered and bruise; scribbled in, tossed around, sat on, ripped out, handed around, stained with beer, soaked in swimming shorts and filled with future world-conquering ideas.

Changing the world not really your bag? Several rounds of Noughts + Crosses will do just fine, they'd be happy with that. Available at Cool Material here.
