Coffee Roasters - Your Recommendations

Koffie Leute + Ohoj Roasters in Utrecht back in October

It’s fair to say that I can’t replicate the good brews that our coffee shops offer, but since lockdown I’ve been giving it a shot, trading off beans from a different roaster each month. Last week I asked for your favourite coffee roasters, via my Instagram Stories, so I thought I’d whack them into a list for future reference:

Our House Tour, Updated

Porch Tiles by Tops Tiles, Desk by Dan Marc, Wall Mounted Shelf by IKEA x HAY, Lamp by Anglepoise x Paul Smith

[Features gifted items]

Whoa there, has been a long time coming! I seem to share an interior update maybe once a year, but this is probably the first time I've done the full shebang - the full house tour. It's pretty surreal to think we've been homeowners for nearly three years, and it honestly feels like yesterday since we were plastering white paper on to our windows for curtains and having dinner from the floor.

A lot has changed at number 23, both me and Hollie are incredibly proud of the work we have done on our humble 1930's semi-detached plot. The small tweaks, the big builds, the epic DIYs (if anyone remembers last summer's back garden fence project?!), the investment pieces and the last minute repair job - the whole thing is a massive learning curve, and something that has helped us grow as individuals.

So let's have a nose around:

 the living room

About three months ago we embarked on an interior styling project with American furniture and homeware brand West Elm. We have a bunch of items by the brand already - including the mid-century walnut bar cart, which we received as a wedding present - and they'd been enjoying my interior content which I'd been sharing on my Instagram page. So they approached us with an idea; pick out some stuff from their website to integrate into our home, documenting the styling of each item across my social accounts, blog and follow up with a feature on their website. Ace!

It's an on-going project as things are always changing around ours; with corners taking a reshuffle on a weekly basis, new things being built [my father-in-law made our dining room table], and adapting the rooms depending on the weather, aka if the bi-fold doors are open we need to move certain things out the way.

So as you look though these photos you may spot a few things dancing around depending on when I first took the photo :) We both really love this space and spend most of our time there.

the dining room

This is the space I've always struggled to photograph, but still one of my favourite areas in our whole house. Where all the good stuff gets eaten. The slight jut-out from our living room / kitchen area was created by the previous owners, and if you look at the original plans for the house you can see that our now-dining room was once part of the back garden.

The skylight brings loads of natural light in even when it's a dull day - slightly defused by the privacy glass we had installed (we don't want our neighbours seeing what we're eating!) - and the red brick wall is sympathetic to the original time period.

The West Elm sideboard and chairs worked perfectly with our style, which is somewhere between mid-century Americana and Scandinavian, but I would still like to add a little more colour and interest above the wall. New lampshades needed too.

 the bedroom

One of the first rooms we decorated was the bedroom, and it's probably the most simplistic in the house. I'm terrible at sleeping, even at the best of times, so the idea was to create a relaxing space, free from clutter and void of anything too distracting. The result is a airy, neutral space, filled with soft sandy coloured walls, beige linen bedsheets and subtle brass fixings.

For the long terms plan we aim to get rid of the grey carpet and restore the original floor boards to a liveable state, add a nice big rug, heavy curtains and away we go!

Sideboard by IKEA, Planter by West Elm [we bought that one], chair by Made, cushions by Anthropologie

the front room and back garden

One complete room vs one total work-in-progress. I realise that I'm not really showing off these spaces so well here, but I'm planning to do a full video house tour over on IGTV soon - then I'll be able to get in deets a little more.

The front room is a cosy kinda place, heavily influenced by the art deco and mid-century design movements, with an added bit of Asian travel and 50's Americana. Ok, that probably sounds well schmancy, but it works, honest. You'll see, soon.

And that leaves us with the back garden. The biiiiiig ongoing project. Currently we have four tub chairs, a small round table and two plant pots, sans-plants. We're planning to build some wooden planters around the edge in the same style as we built the fence, and create a dining area in the opposite corner, complete with pergola, tall plants and maybe a space for a small bbq. We'll make that happen soon!

I hope you have enjoyed a little look around our home. As things change I'll try to keep updated you via more blog posts and such, but until then if you'd like to see more of how we created each room then be sure to check out my highlight tabs on Instagram.

Our Money Journey | How We Afforded Our First House

I can hardly believe that we are approaching our third year as homeowners. I couldn't even imagine past the first month, but here we are! That's three challenging but extremely rewarding years of memories pumped right into our 3-bed semi-detached house in a small working-class town in Lancashire. I realised that I haven't actually shared loads about "where we're at", the classic life updates have been few and far between - that's been an organic reaction to how we create and consume content on social media platforms. Instagam is indeed that, instant content - so while I may be concentrating my day-to-day more on IG it's still mega rewarding to bash out a few hundred words every now and again on my blog.

So much has changed in our house in (nearly) three years. There's a heck of a lot to be proud of; we redecorated our lounge, bedroom and downstairs bathroom, converted the wrecked garage into a functioning utility and the biggest achievement of all, we totally transformed our overgrown, tired back garden into a space that we are unbelievably happy with. Still a work-in-progress though.

Next on our list is to renovate our open-plan living room / kitchen / dining room area - but that all comes with time. We're just planning and saving for the right moment.

How we Afforded our First House

I'd like to start this piece by explaining our circumstances. We decided to buy a house in a small town instead of moving to one of the bigger cities in the UK. This enabled us to afford the type of property we just wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. Hollie works full time as a university lecturer, and I work full time as a freelancer creative in the fashion and lifestyle industry.

There's somewhat murky grounds with how much (and generally just "how") freelancers in the creative industry earn, and how they afford to live their lifestyle. It's not a subject widely discussed. If we skip back to the time me + Hollie were applying for our mortgage, it quickly became clear just how unknown my job role was to people outside of the same industry. The conversations we had with our mortgage broker + several banks would make for interesting listening...but we did get accepted! A somewhat milestone achievement at the time, for what is now commonly known as "an influencer".

We put a good sized deposit down on our first house (around 15%), one that I'd had in a savings account - similar to The Nottingham's 18-39 Lifetime ISA - since I was 18-years-old at art collage, then moved in shortly after. We had very little furniture and appliances, but we made it work. Being scrupulous with money is a quality that has been past down to me from my grandad, who was my main father figure when growing up. I didn't realise it at the time, but a lot of his mannerisms and personality traits rubbed off on me, and as boring as it sounds I now consider my attentiveness with saving and budgeting to be one of my strong points.

Whitworth Locke Hotel, Manchester

whitworth locke hotel manchester review with mat buckets wearing skagen
whitworth locke hotel in manchester interior details
I'm honestly not too sure why I'm writing this on Christmas Eve but it's been in my head since the other day, and the only way to get rid of that before the big guy arrives is to jot some short thoughts down.

The new Whitworth Locke Hotel recently swung open its doors in Manchester. The city feels like it's having a proper extended moment - I can't really think of another place in the UK right now that's covering so many areas to such a high + creative standard. The Whitworth Locke - located just on the edge of Chinatown + Oxford Road - is the latest gaff to grab some sleep in. You'd be excused if you spend equal amounts of time in their bar (thankfully a decent amount of non-generic beer + cocktails), lobby, cafe resturant and co-working space as you do in the rooms.

We have come to expect quite a bit from a hotel visit these days; we want a unique experience, that comes with a memorable interior, personalised service and a high level of finer detail, all for a price we deem as decent. Whitworth Locke breezes through all of the above, including the price. I'll come to the rooms in another blog post, so if these interior snapshots are ringing your buzzer then be sure to check back soon.

With all the constant DIY going on in our house it's refreshing to be able to walk into a room without seeing tool lurking around every corner. In fact, our bedroom has been 100% tooltime free for a good month now. We keep saying "it's not quite finished yet", but then is anywhere actually ever complete? To be fair though, we're not actually plan to do much more to this space, other than restore the original 1930s floorboards and add a few more personal touches.

There's a few things I didn't manage to photograph this time, like our new mirror, and cabinet at the end of our bed, as well as Hollie's side table. But then, it probably doesn't harm to hold a few things back, after all it is our bedroom.  I'm sure you'll catch a further of a glimpse on my Instagram Stories, have you been watching?

MR P. My Way SS18

MR P.  Blouson Jacket | MR P. Boucle-Stripe Tee | MR P. Camp Collar Shirt | Whistles Trousers | Converse Sneakers | Cutler & Gross Glasses

Along with a handful of creatives, writers, entrepreneurs + craftsmen from from all around the world, I was recently invited by MR PORTER to style a few pieces from the SS18 MR P. collection. The collection itself is full of easy to wear pieces, none of which are screaming out to out any particular trend or time period - the hallmarks of a versatile wardrobe, that will only improve with age. That's my kind of thinking.

MR P.'s latest capsule collection sticks to a soft pallet of blues, greens, beige, grey, with some added faded reds and orange. A splash of colour would have gone down a treat for me, but for our morning spent at Lyle's Restaurant in Shoreditch, the weather wasn't up to much, so I matched that with three muted pieces which matched my personality - with the Boucle-Stripe textured t-shirt being the no.1 top dog for me.

If the opportunity comes around again I'd love to show the MR PORTER team around some of my favourite stops in Manchester, I know they'd love it!

It feels like ages since I last did any kind of home / office update, so yesterday morning I took full advantage of the early morning sunshine, and quickly pointed my camera in the direction of some of my favourite details.

My office is where I spend most of my time when I'm working from home, and it's my personal preference to have this space as uplifting and motivating as possible. We turned our tiny box room into my workspace, but it acts more as a place to store some of our favourite possessions and memories that we have picked up on our travels :)

Two of my favourite pieces in here are also two of my most loved possessions: the Dan Marc Writing Desk (worth checking his Instagram account for updates) + the Anglepoise x Paul Smith Type 75 lamp. My personal relationship with British designer Dan Marc (we've been friends for around three years, but within the first few months we spent 10 days travelling around Japan) has cemented my love for this locally designed + produced work of art. The Type 75 Desk Lamp was a very thoughtful gifted from Hollie + my in-laws, for my 30th birthday - it one combines my love for playful colour + progressive design.

Point your eyes towards our shelves and you'll find some of my favourite beer label designs, mementos from holidays + work trips, characters that remind us both of our childhood (I value the journey from childhood to adulthood extremely important) + other bits and bobs that we think look nice together.

Then there's the other corner of the room that doesn't get any camera time, and that's because it's an absolute mess! Let's just call it a work in progress. I hope you've enjoyed this little look around my current workspace set-up.
