Visiting Marseille, France with the new BMW 6 Series Part Two

bmw 2015, bmw 6 series, bmw 6 series gran coupe, 6 series convertible, 6 series coupe review
If Day One was a whirlwind then I really didn't know what I was getting myself in for with Day Two. Just to get us all up to speed, Day One consisted of us zipping around the South of France in the new BMW 6 Series: 650i Coupé, 650i xDrive Gran Coupé and the 640d Convertible. We took off through tiny historical towns, twisting mountains and up Marseille's endless highways. It was intense, but nothing could prepare me for what they had planned for the next day.

We gathered just outside of BMW's top secret test track at 9am. Straight away we handed in our passports over to security, before being checked over just in case we were undercover spies. This place was high security, which only added to the anticipation of what laid ahead.

Multicoloured Basketball Court in Paris + Weekend Links

When your basketball court is multicoloured and tucked away in between a row of buildings in the centre of Paris, you know you're onto a winner. So effective, and it certainly made us smile. Designed by Ill-Studio for fashion brand, Pigalle. First seen on Dezeen.

Phew, the weekend came around just when I needed it. It's Resting up time, with a beer + some cycling. No work. Enjoy yours, my friends!

Visiting Marseille, France with the new BMW 6 Series

To me, France is quickly turning into the 26 Bus of countries; you live most of your life just near the route, without giving it a secondary thought, then something comes up and you have to use said route twice in the space of as many months. In May I had the opportunity to join the BMW team, to spend two days driving around Marseille. The South of France was selected for its long winding roads, Instagram-able views and extra fancy foods. BMW offered us three brand new models of the 6 Series; The Coupé, the Gran Coupé and the Convertible – perfect for the expected sunny weather.

How could I say no?

I arrived in beautiful city of Marseille, with only one thought it mind - rest. But, we were straight out to dinner, to familiarise ourselves with our driving buddies for the next two days. The chaps from Cool Material, MenswearStyle + Ape To Gentleman were all ready to push the BMW 6 Series to the limits. We discussed our driving routes over steak + beers, before getting an early night.

Three European Cities To Visit This Summer

We're up for exploring some new places this summer! | image source

Which cities are you looking to discover + explore this summer? With our Euro Road Trip still in the planning stage – and considering myself + Hollie have already have a trip to Florida booked for June – we’re taking a closer look at a couple of cities across Europe that we think would be great places to stop-over in, and soak up the local culture.

Choosing one in the UK + two in mainland Europe, each city has its own plus-points, strong reasons to visit, and a good bit of history. Perfect for weekend trips for people who love to explore, and who are attached to their cameras. For people like us then!

Let's go!

A mixture of old + new can be found within the streets of the England's second city | image source

Birmingham - Art, Menswear + Independent Businesses

Birmingham may seem like a strange choice, as it's only a three hour train ride away from Lancashire. But considering a budget of around £200 for a weekend, and the fact that we've only ever visit the city for work, Birmingham seems like a great place to start the Buckets road trip across Europe!

England's second city – famed for its integral role in the Industrial Revolution – is by far one of the best connected cities in the country; with trains, buses, planes and motorways running in every direction. Having visited the city before for work, I knew I wanted to return and explore more thoroughly.

Where To Stay

Bloc is a modern boutique hotel with rooms for under £50 a night  | image source

As with all three cities, we want to keep costs down, but we still want to stay in places we'd consider to be modern, well connected to the rest of the city, and of course clean.

Located in the city's historic Jewellery Quarter, Bloc Hotel fits the bill perfectly. With good reviews online and room rates hovering around £45 per night we reckon this would be ideal. Expect it to be basic and small (hence the name?), but it's got everything you need for a short break.

 What To Pack

Never leave the house without a brolly around these parts!

The price of the hotel includes towels and wi-fi (which is becoming increasingly rare for budget hotels these days), but I'd pack extra toiletries like hand soap and shower gel, as they don't always throw them in.

I'd be traveling to Birmingham by train – booked as separate journeys in advance, for a cheaper fare – which is a good three/four hour journey, so I'd plan to catch up on  podcasts with my iPad or use the old Kindle app for a bit of reading.

No doubt it will rain, so my trusty Fulton umbrella, Marmot rain jacket + Red Wing boots will be joining me as standard. A back-up phone charger is a lifesaver these days too.

What To Do

Visit Menswear + Denim Specialist retailer, Liquor Store.

Having a few friends from Birmingham helps, and it didn't take me long to realise you'd never be short of things to do, and places to explore. But if you don't know anyone in the city, try the "explore" feature on Instagram.

The Ikon Gallery regularly rotates its exhibitions of local and international contemporary artists, plus it's totally free! It's great to feel a connection to any new place you visit, so I'd be keen to see the "We Made It" exhibition at Think Tank too. Also the Library of Birmingham is a must-visit. Looking for something a little more exciting, then stick perhaps Indoor F1K on your list. There's also several picturesque parks across the area, so pack a book!

A trip to Birmingham wouldn't be complete without paying a visit to our favourite denim specialists Liquor Store, in the Great Western Arcade either. These guys know their stuff when it comes to menswear, with Store Owner, Phil, working in the denim industry for 15 years.

There's so much more of the city I'm yet to explore, and with quite a few lifestyle bloggers from this part of the country it would be a great opportunity to meet up with them. If it doubt take to the #Birmingham hashtag on Twitter.

Where To Eat & Drink

People watching at an independent, Faculty Coffee

"Where's the nearest coffee shop to the hotel?", is generally my first question when I arrive at a new place. Faculty Coffee is a sweet independent coffee shop who know their way around a strong roast, same goes for Six Eight Kafe. Both can be found slap-bang in the centre of the city.

With the aim to keep things affordable but still considered, we'd give The Church Inn (Winnie's recommendation) for cocktails – with 20% off every Wednesday with their Whiskey Club – and classic American soul food, and for beers I hear Pure Bar + Kitchen is worth paying a visit.

Three Days in France with Courvoisier | Part 2

A few weeks have past since we took a surprise trip away with French cognac brand Courvoisier, but the memories are still as fresh as the day we arrived. Yesterday I gave a presentation to a group of stying students at UCLan University and someone asked me, "what's the coolest thing you've done through your blog?". I immediately knew the answer was our three days spent in France.

The first few hours with Courvoisier were super intense. Fueled on unpronounceable canapes, we toured their Le Chateau, old cellars, drank cognac whilst blindfolded, took a fleeting visit around the town, had dinner opposite the Master Blender and attended a cocktail competition....All 38 of us were just going with the flow, literally. As we caught the coach to final next destination we were all still second-guessing their next move.

"How about we go to Paris", was heckled from the front of the coach, which was met with a roar of "whoops" from most and surprise from all. Three hours later myself and Nik found ourselves standing in a plush 5* old school hotel room, just off the Champs-Elysees. We navigated our way around two finger sandwiches (don't these French folk eat proper meals?) and a bottle of pop each, before heading to a private roottop party. "We're in Paris right?". We literally had no time to take in this surreal situation. I hadn't even seen the whole of the Eiffel Tower yet!

The next few hours were some of the most memorable of my life. We met up with our new friends + travel buddies at Hotel Raphael for the swanky rooftop party; which had a view like no other. On one side the imposing figure of the Arc de Triomph, on the other was the Eiffel Tower, in all its glory. Parties aren't usually my bag but combining this with new friends, tireless entertainment from a magician/comedian/all-round top bloke and the beautiful voice of Katie Elin-Salt, well let's just say, it was a magical night end to a perfect evening.

The next morning we awoke bright and early, stocked up on Bacon McMuffins + coffee (as you do) and met the group for a final outing, to the one of Paris' most beautiful parks public, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. Things were still quite hazy from the night before but as we walked across the park's famous bridges I remember feeling a huge sense of content, I could have stayed there all day. All that was to jump the Eurostar and head back to reality.

A big thank you to the Courvoisier team for making this trip happen. It was a very memorable + extremely enjoyable three days - I'm so glad I got to share it with some truly awesome people (you know who you are). This isn't one I'll be forgetting in a hurry.

Three Days in France with Courvoisier | Part 1

Along with 30+ total strangers, Buckets & Spades headed to France, in which turned out to be one of the most surreal weekends of my life. The only information we given by Courvoisier (myself + that chap Nik) was to meet at London Victoria Train Station at 9am, with a suitcase packed with enough clothes for three days. And don't forget your suit. So I set my alarm for an insane 3am the night before, and travelled down to London, to meet our new friends for the next few days.

The theme of the trip was #HeresToNow; celebrating the moment, thinking spontaneously and ceasing the day. Courvoiser's aim was to keep us in the dark about the whole trip but a sneaky Google search on the train down told me that it was likely we'd be headed to the swanky Le Chateau in Jarnac, south of France.

Along with a bunch of bloggers, press and competition winners we boarded the Gatwick Express, and each given a seal envelope that confused us all the more. Man, it was so early, but my intrigue was 100% piqued.

Apologies for the silence for a the last couple of days, we headed off to a "mystery" destination with French Cognac brand Courvoisier. It was one of the most surreal experiences of my life (Nik came along too, he heard there might be some food...), due to the fact we were kept in the dark about what we'd be doing and where we'd be good.

The first shot is from the top of Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in Paris, I could forgive myself for thinking it was all a dream. Can't wait to share more of our #HereToNow experience.
