Meanwhile, in Orlando | Travel Diary

It's the weirdest thing, when I'm away holiday, that moment in time really is the only thing that matters. I've got quite a bit of work that needs doing and a few deadlines creeping but they can wait, 'cos beers by the pool + planning what restaurant to eat at next is all I can think about.

We've been back from Orlando for about a month now, and a few days after getting home I found myself on a plane heading for Lisbon - for a fun work trip with my mate Jordan (more on that soon). There aren't that many other jobs that I can think of where these kind of last minute trips make sense - I tend to have a reality-check moment while I'm away and think to myself - or sometimes out loud - "oh know what, how cool is this job!?" It's very cool, and I think it pays to remind myself this, but also what it's taken to get to this point in my life too.

I'd never say it's a hard job, I mean, it comes with a lot of stress, anxiety and hard work, but then if I compare it to, say, hospital workers, the policeforce or even the pilot up front flying the plane, then it puts things into perspective. It's all relative though.

I like to use these trips with Hollie as a bit of a release from work, but I never really switch off my camera. I guess it's ingrained in me now, as a geezer who just loves to take photos. It makes me happy - and it's not just for sharing on social media sake, but for my own sense of purpose. Maybe it helps me look at life a little deeper; to notice more, see things that don't seem to matter but ultimately have a meaning, living day-to-day by being aware of how cool normal life actually is.

Doom Bar Sessions in Cornwall w/ Sharp's Brewery

Sometimes I have a tendency to only think forward. Forward is good, in fact, it's great; it helps you  push yourself creativity, set goals and strive to become the person who you want to be. But looking back on past experiences is just as important, and can help you put the slower weeks into perspective. I'll sit in my office, take one look at my very mundane to-do list and think, "what the heck am I doing?!". But then one quick flashback though the past 12 months in my head always reminds me that I have zilch to moan about.

There's a couple of moments that I think back to, surreal situation which leave me wondering how did I end up there. Saying yes to intriguing opportunities seems to lead me down a very wacky path, and as long as there's no "risk" I'm fully on board.

One of these moments was on a recent trip down to Cornwall with local brewing bin guns, Sharp's Brewery, who invited myself and Dan to their annual Doom Bar Session. The invite said there'd be a a nice hotel, a tour of the brewery with a tasting session and meal,  time to explore the neighbouring villages, and a gig on a small boat with Feeder...sign me up.

This trip turned out to be one of those surreal moments, one which I 100% do not regret saying yes to. In fact, the two day stay down in the tiny village of Polzeath Cornwall, just outside of the even more quaint town of Padstow, turned out to be extra special for me.

I don't shy away from sharing my love of craft beer, as well as championing the people who take a risk to turn their ideas-on-paper become a reality. For me,  I have an underlying urge to do more in the beer industry. I have no idea what that idea is, or indeed much knowledge of the business, I just know there's room for me in there somewhere.

And for me to be invited down by a respected brewer to enjoy the area's colourful cafes, epic surfing coastlines and local foods is very humbling. But not only that, I got to relive my teenage years - along with 120 other people on a tiny boat - by seeing Feeder belt out their greatest hit!

--------

We stayed at St. Moritz Hotel, hung out at TubeStation and Fee's Food, ate at Rojano's In The Square + The Mariners, and drank at The Old Ship + Sharp's Brewery.

I was a guest of Sharp's Brewery, who covered my trip to Cornwall for the weekend. Your support of the brands + businesses we work with helps make this blog happen.

Orlando's Slower Pace

poolside flatlay in orlando with ballast point ipa, contrarian magazine, moscot glasses and birkenstock sandals

Oh boy, it seems like forever since I've tapped some words out on here. My bad, this past two months have been some of the busiest and most rewarding of my life. I have a whole list of content that I can't wait to share, but for the next ten day we will be enjoying some down time.

So here's my super "gone fishing" message - we're currently soaking up some overly-humid rays in Orlando, celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary, with day trips to Tampa, St Petersburg, Naples and Winter Park.

24 Hours in Berlin with Stone Brewing

Stone Brewing: Im Marienpark 23, 12107 Berlin

You could draw a very similar comparison between starting a craft beer company + working as a full time blogger / content creator as worlds apart as each may seem. Both careers both come from a place of passion. That enthusiasm and love towards what we do is a driving factor towards the success of growing something out of nothing.

We all have different ways of measuring success; for me, putting a deposit down for our first house felt like a huge milestone, and a testament to how much can be achieved through new media. I get the feeling that Stone Brewing a San Diego-based craft beer company, and one of my all time favourite brewers felt a similar achievement when they opened their first brewing facility outside of the US, in September '16.

It was a bold move in the beer world, setting up their European base in Berlin given the country's history of beer but without taking a few risks in life you could be left with many unanswered questions.

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens

I was very humbled when Stone Brewing invited me over to see what they've created; not only a state-of-the-art brewing facility but the stunning bar, restaurant, event space and gardens, all housed on the grounds of a former gas works.

With 75 beers on tap (for all those "untappd" fans) you could have just left us there for the weekend, but with my new camera itching to be used I knew I needed to do a little exploration of the city. With just over 24 hours to see a new side of Berlin,  I looked to my Instagram community + the Stone Brewing themselves for recommedations:

Five Elephants

As the cliche goes, first stop, coffee. Berlin is packed with coffee shops, and nice looking ones at that. A considered and inviting interior is high on priority, but it always needs to be backed up with good tasting coffee, a decent selection of food, friendly staff and a nice presentation. It's confirm, Five Elephants fits perfectly into that criteria.

A sweet little place, with a black, white and copper themed interior,  kitted out with beautiful terrazzo counter tops by British designer Max Lamb. Try the cheesecake! Five Elephants: Alte Schönhauser Str. 14, 10119, Berlin.

SODA Bookstore

Magazine and book stores are always somewhere on my list, a few suggestions came my way but we ended up seeking out SODA Bookstore; an independently owned shop for "curious people". I don't think I've ever seen so many publications housed in such an aesthetically pleasing room before. Covering food and fashion, architecture and travel, and more specialist subjects like pets, food and science.

I left empty handed, but next time I'll do my best to pick up a couple of local rags. SODA Bookstore: Weinbergsweg 1, 10119 Berlin.

Stone Recommends - Michelberger Hotel

This was my second time visiting Berlin, but as the city is so huge (with some many accommodation options) I left the hotel arrangements to Stone. They assured us that the Michelbeger Hotel was where we needed to stay. One step into the hotel lobby are you can instantly see why this place is so highly regarded.

Exposed plaster seems to be a big thing in Berlin, and the Michelbeger has it in abundance, running through the lobby, concierge, rooms, bar and restaurant. And speaking of the restaurant (we had both breakfast and dinner here), I've got to stay, the 4-course dinner was one of the best I've had in a long time. Brussels sprouts, miso, chilli, seaweed veg; black pudding, smoked potato, fermented peach mash; beetroots, walnut, dill, liquorice salad not your usual offering!

The rooms were comfy and inviting, a decent place to rest your feet after 20,000 steps. But, if only they sold their seriously neckable canned coconut water in the UK...Michelberger Hotel: Warschauer Str. 39-40, 10243 Berlin, Germany

Voo Store

When the recommendations came in on Instagram a few of the same names kept cropped up, Voo Store was one of them. Men's and Women's clothing and accessories with a heavy leans towards streetwear + conceptual is mixed in with contemporary homeware, sneakers, magazines and collectables. You'll find APC, JW Anderson, Our Legacy, Joseph and the usual footwear suspects.

It's not the biggest of department stores, but if your feet are sore there's a little bakery nestled in the back corner: Companion Coffee. Voo Store: Oranienstraße 24, 10999 Berlin.

Stone Recommends - Lager Lager

After pounding the pavement for most of the day we made our way south of Kreuzberg to Lager Lager; a tiny craft beer bottle shop and bar. This place is a celebration of all good beer. I spotted brews from Yorkshire's Magic Rock Brewery, Manchester's Cloud Water, Copenhagen's Mikkeller, a strong amount of local micro-breweries and of course, the Berlin-brewed IPAs, weiss beers + stouts by Stone. If you're wondering, my favourite beer by Stone Brewing is their Cali-Belgique IPA.

Simple modern branding, carefully considered guest beers on tap and good tunes on the radio made for a memorable visit to this modestly sized specialist bar. Lager Lager: Pflügerstraße 68, 12047 Berlin.

We also visited:

As I was saying earlier, we all have different ways of measuring success. I returned home from Berlin feeling really good about the city, with positive thoughts towards a brewery I'm enthusiastic about, and a little bit of experience under my belt with a brand new camera. I'd called that a resounding success if you ask me!

I was invited over to Berlin by Stone Brewing, who kindly covered for my stay + beer tab. Your support of the brands + businesses we work with helps make this blog happen.

Beer & Design | Branding Refresh for Mariner Brewing Company

There's a few things in life that I'd say I'm very passionate about, and presentation is one of them. How we decide which restaurant to spend our money in, how we approach editing photos (granted, not always my strong point), how we dress ourselves for a first-time meeting, or deciding which product to choose out of several that seem to offer the same thing presentation likes to sway our decisions. It's a subject I love, and if it happens to involve another subject I'm as equally passion about you guessed it... then it's a win/win all around!

"Set no path. Never be lost"

Mariner Brewing Company is a small brewery + tap room spot in Coquitlam, Canada, just shy of 30 minutes drive from Vancouver. I don't know too much about their beers, but I do know that they recently gave Vancouver-based design agency, Glasfurd & Walker, the reins to create a whole new identity for them. The update includes a fresh take on the brand's logo, updated typeface, packaging design, personalised beer growlers, pump clips, glassware, staff uniforms and bespoke stationery with inspiraption coming from sea exploration + NASA's Mariner Programe.

It's unlikely we'll ever see these beers pop up in our local supermarket, but it's definitely a name to note down if you're considering heading to that part of the world.

See more from this branding project here. Did you know I run an Instagram account dedicated to packaging?
