Cocktails Through The Letter Box with Shaken

Something mad has been happening in our household over the past few months: beer has taken a backseat, and spirits have stepped up to the oche. It started harmlessly enough, with a whisky tasting class here, and a tour of a gin distillery there, and now I hear that this week is National Cocktail Week...its appeal shows no signs of slowing down.

The main reason I've pumped the breaks on beer a little is due to it constantly leaving me feeling bloated. I still have maybe a couple of bottles a week, but lately I've turned into a Gin + Tonic or Mint Julep kinda character.

So when Shaken contacted me to see if I'd be keen to trial their monthly cocktail kit subscription I jumped at the chance to test out some new combinations.

We're all pretty familiar with the way monthly subscriptions work now, and Shaken's model uses the tried-and-tested formula: with premium ingredients and tailored recipes delivered straight to your door. I've come across monthly beer + food subscriptions but not specifically one for cocktails, so I was definitely intrigued.

We picked Shaken's Gin-based box

A few days later a neatly packaged box arrived at our door, containing enough ingredients (all liquid-based, no fresh lemons, limes etc.) to make four cocktails, plus a neat recipe guide to fit our chosen spirit. We chose gin as our base, of course!

Without delay we started to prepare our first cocktail: The Aviation. With all the ingredients we needed within the box it made for a nicer experience than the usual dashing around the supermarket, then getting home to realise you'd forgotten something. We did need to pick up some fresh stuff in our weekly shop, but nothing we wouldn't usually buy.

The Aviation cocktail was a cross between a Parma Violets' explosion and something James Bond would have been sipping in From Russia With Love! Very swankytown.

Our kit included - Brooker's Gin, green chartreuse, creme de violette, absinthe and maraschino cherry liqueur

Our second offering was the curiously named The Last Word. It sure lived up to its name too - we'd say this one is to be savoured, rather than sunk. I loved the aniseed kick from the absinthe, which again, took me back to my childhood and those penny sweet shops. The Last Word comes in a solid first place for me, while Hollie was more of a creme de violette gal.

Overall the experience of receiving a hand-picked cocktail kit through the post, from Shaken, was an experience myself+ Hollie both really enjoyed, as I like the idea of trying something new (other than the standard recipes) each month. It got us thinking more about what flavours work together, and how paying a little more for quality ingredients runs beyond food - the mixers + garnish are a big deal too. At £24 per month (you can opt out at any time), it's comparable in price to other drinks subscriptions, if not slightly cheaper.

If you would like to hear more about how the Shaken subscription works then click here. But lastly, we'd love for you to share some cocktails with us, what's your favourite?

This post is in partnership with Shaken. Thank you for taking the time to support the projects + businesses that make this blog happen.

  1. I love the idea of this and I'll have to give it a try soon. The Aviation cocktails sounds just my thing.

I've tried out MicroBarBox a few times which is also fun!

  2. What a neat idea. Looks like they give you really interesting mixes to try, too!

I too have been a little off the beer lately - it just doesn't bode well for my stomach. I do usually have a sip or two off my fella's or my dad's interesting beer choices when I'm with them. But gin & tonic has been my go-to.

I also am a big fan of any cocktail with ginger, spiced rum, and lime. I'm not sure of the name (it usually changes) but those are definitely my jam.

    Fun! And brilliant photos too.
I tried out the kits from tastecocktails.com, which look really similar to this, and loved it. Made about 7 drinks with my box, I think. It would be cool if you could try out both (or more!?) and compare them.

Great photos Matt, are these from your new camera? This is really cool, what a good idea! I might have to jump on a subscription for something! I love the simple design on the bottles also.

  7. This is a fantastic idea. It's difficult (for me) to go out and buy everything to make a drink without knowing if I'm going to like it, so something that gives you all the ingredients for just a few drinks is really brilliant.

  8. LUCKY! My lack of knowledge is the only thing keeping me from having a mini bar at our loft. I used to just be a beer girl. I couldn't go wrong but as you mentioned, you feel bloated and notice your stomach doesn't have as much glory as it used to! lol.

  15. yeah and it's very expensive / you have to go to a million places to find everything / waste of time. I don't drink complicated cocktails at home usually, just ones with 2 or 3 things in max. But this was a nice experiement.

  16. These were on my old camera, not the 4K one. The Lumix GX7, again not perfect but I'm always trying. Caught the drips pretty well (that was on the new one). The light was quite nice. Yeah do, that or socks!

  17. I've seen all sorts of subscriptions online like Sock club London. Are you on any other ones?

  18. Form & Thread all the way, such good quality. You can buy none-subscription too. https://formandthread.com/ Personally I think SCL are too thin.

  21. Oh, yeah. NYC is full of schools. I'm having a hard time choosing one. They are pretty affordable too - starting at $245 or so. :)

  22. For how many classes? I need to get myself over again.

  23. Usually between 5 and 10 classes. Sometimes 1 class per week, sometimes a full weekend workshop... depends on the school -some have more options than others, it looks like. I suggest you search "NYC mixology classes" and Google will hit you back with a full page of schools easily. =D
