An Interview with Facehunter | Antony Morato Tales of Style

Several years have gone by since I first started reading blogs, but I still remember some of the first few that really got me excited about the format. I followed a few blogs before I decided to start one myself - one which spurred me on in particular was Style Salvage (sadly now pretty quiet). Little known fact - I started Buckets & Spades as a way of storing images, because my computer was full. Slso Hollie didn't believe I'd be able to keep it up, well well well! Back then "blogging" was something I did on a Sunday evening, never once did I ever think I could be running one full time! It took me years to not be embarrassed about this hobby, which to an outsider sounded more like some kind of weird secret diary that what it was.

Another one of those blogs I followed was Facehunter. I caught up with the man behind the camera, Yvan Rodic, to talk about his time on the road, street style + latest project, "Tales of Style", with Milan-based fashion store Antony Morato. It's funny how these things work out hey!

--------------------

Hey Yvan, thanks for talking the time out to chat to me, it’s been tricky tracking you down as I know you’re on the move 24/7. How do you cope with being on the road so much, it must be shattering?
I wouldn't say shattering, it's an amazing privilege. Traveling is really a choice for me, I don't mind. It can be very intense, but it's never tiring. Tiring to me is being in the same place all the time.

Do you have a place that you call home right now?
London.

So tell me how you got involved with the Anthony Morato Project and what made this project stand out?
The philosophy of the brand is very close to my way of living – it's about sharing a hedonistic life (the one I have) therefore it was an obvious choice for me to work with them.

What are your favourite pieces from the Antony Morato collection?
My favourite is surely my blue blazer, the one with the grey elbow patches.

What are your views on the other photographers taking part in the project?
They are all photographers who travel and who are interested in aesthetics. They all have their point of view and lead what we can call an aspirational lifestyles.

You’re usually behind the camera, but for this project the focus is on you. I do remember a few years back you used to feature in short city videos on Facehunter, is this you introducing yourself back to the other side?
I've always been in front of the camera, I do it rather regularly so I wouldn't call it a comeback.

Another project of yours which stands out for me is the footwear collaboration you took part in for Farfetched. How was the experience with designing your own pair of boots + how much control did you have over the design?
It was one of my most exciting projects. I had total freedom, regardless of the fact that I had no technical knowledge whatsoever. I went to a workshop in Portugal where they were creating shoes and where shoes of leading fashion brands were being crafted and closely followed the whole process. Here I translated by ideas into reality, it was very nice, I could choose almost any material, any fabric.

Do you have a favourite country to shoot in, and more specifically any particular district?
My aim is diversity. Even the best place of the world gets a bit boring if you keep shooting there. I prefer to alternate. Starting from this, I could say that Scandinavia is always inspiring, but also Sidney, Sao Paulo, London, New York, and other less normal places.

You must be in a different restaurant each night, it’s probably a safe question to ask which are some of your favourites so how about which are the most unique and memorable?
For over a year I've been obsessed with Peruvian cuisine. It's still quite unknown in Europe, and it's very interesting. I found only a few restaurants in London.

If and when you do manage to get any downtime what do you end up doing? Do you have any passions other than photography?
I go to exhibitions, I learn languages, I read things I don't know about. To sum it up, I like to learn. I am interested in sociology, psychology, linguistics…I like to read about how people think, individually and as a group.

I used to read Facehunter too back in the day, and I've only recently opened up about my blog as they wanted to know if anyone uses social media on the course etc... I still feel a tad embarrassed though, it's hard to sum up why really, I think it's just because people may not understand haha.
