Inspiration - Yayoi Kusama's The Obliteration Room

I love the way colour can have big impact on your mood and outlook for the day. You only have to look out your window on a sunny morning, it makes you want to get out there and enjoy yourself. Admittedly it is usually grey in England so you have to go to other lengths to put you in a good mood. I usually do it through socks but that's another matter altogether.

The concept behind Yayoi Kusma's Obliteration Room was to start of with a blank canvas, a completely white interior and let children lose on the room with colourful dots. Minute by minute the look of the room would change, creating a whole new experience each time you enter. I love the idea of it starting off so innocently and they BOOM, the whole thing goes crazy. The interactive installation is still on till next month, if you happen to be in Queensland.

So this weekend I will be trying to add a bit more colour to my outfits than usual. Give it a go!

In other news my blog was voted in Voucher Codes' Most Wanted Fashion 100: February 2012 Edition, in the menswear category. I'm in good company too, with some familiar faces.

  1. I love this kind of thing, although I do wonder how the kids managed to reach the ceiling. Unfortunately I'm nowhere near Queensland, if only!

The socks comment made me chuckle. Whenever you post shoe shots there is always a funky explosion of colour in the form of socks.

These photographs are incredible, bright colour really does make you smile. You sort of do think of childhood when you see colours, especially bold, bright ones. It takes me back to my nursary days of dipping my hands in the big pots of red, yellow, blue paint and splatting it all over paper.

Thanks for the comment on the doc's too, I've drawn 6 so far and those were my favourite of the bunch!

Woo, good luck on your test when it comes around. Mine are going well, I slip up sometimes though so I still don't feel completely confident.

  4. Dayum, this looks brilliant yet so headache-provoking. I really like the concept too, and just what you say... how much a tiny bit of colour (or a ray of sunlight) can change your mood.

I really do wonder how these kids put the colours on the ceiling.. but I think I shouldn't think about that too much. :')

  8. Damn, I wouldn't expect an installation like that to be in Queensland, that's cool, it would be even cooler if they brought it down to Melbourne.

  12. This is pretty neat! I bet it would be insane to view the exhibit in person. It's probably pretty harsh on the eyes I would think. This reminds me a lot of the brand Baby Cakes stores. Are you familiar with them? They are a bit out there. I myself have been trying to add some more color to my outfits. The colored socks I own now have been playing a big affect on me. haha.

  18. Aw wow, I love the in between times when it's going from blank to mental. Sort of reminds me of that bit in We Need to Talk About Kevin. I really wanted to go to her exhibition (I think it's the same woman) & her Alice in Wonderland book is absolutely gorgeous!

Brilliant! I like before, and after. Your comment about the effects of color on the mood or perspective, evokes philosophical questions about the what constitutes beauty, as well as color theory. Interesting.
