Mark Khaisman's Tapework

Ukraine born Artist Mark Khaisman specialises in the niche market of recreating old film stills and photographs with none other than good old trusty Scotch Tape.

The former Architect, now based in Philidelphia, Khaisman say's he creates his work by using, " layer upon layer of translucent packing tape, applied to clear Plexiglas and placed in front of a light box to give the image shadow and depth. The 2-inch tape acts as a wide brush, and the light behind the panels as an alchemist's luminous blending medium."

On Khaisman's website he says it takes him a whole week to complete each new piece. He found this "tapework" technique by accident and was a natural progression from experimenting with glass work and playing with lighting effects. The overall effect fascinates me, but I can only imagine it looks 10 times more impressive in real life.

  1. Is it bad that this reminds me of something that they'd do on smArt? In a good way!

  2. That's rather cool..It reminds me a bit of an artist called David Mach who makes huge collage portraits made from hundreds and hundreds of the same postcard shredded up and then assembled as the portrait like this

You can't really see on his site, but they are really clever and quite funny.. like he did a portrait of the Queen using loads of cut-up postcards of a girl in a bikini on a beach.. no idea how he does it, although I suspect he has a forumla now because he produces quite a lot and sells them at £25k a pop.,

  3. ej - agreed with the smART, to confirm i asked two more people and that said the same. in a good way!

haps - yeah i can totally see the likeness there, feel like i've come across his work before, or something very similar by someone else. 25k a pop eh, would be cheaper to make your own, im sure it's doable.
